The White House said these organizations promote "radical climate policies, global governance, and ideological programs that conflict with U.S. sovereignty and economic strength." This follows earlier withdrawals from the World Health Organization, UNRWA, the UN Human Rights Council, and UNESCO.
Total isolation––to crash the country to the ground
ReplyDeleteBrowsing the list of UN outfits, the US is leaving, I noted UNAOC, which I can not recall having come across in my 30 years with the organisation. So I asked AI what they were up to and got the following reply:
ReplyDelete"UNAOC is not a treaty-based body, has no operational mandate, no field presence, and no measurable lifesaving impact. It exists largely as a Secretariat-led initiative producing conferences, statements and fellowships—activities that may be well-intentioned but sit far outside the UN’s core responsibilities.
At a time when WFP cuts food rations, UNICEF closes programmes, and UNHCR reduces protection, it is entirely legitimate for member states to ask why scarce taxpayer money should fund a loosely governed “dialogue platform” that duplicates work already done by UNESCO, OHCHR and others.
The United States is not “abandoning multilateralism” by leaving UNAOC. It is doing what responsible donors should do: prioritising institutions that save lives, protect civilians and deliver results over those that mainly generate rhetoric".
I agree - there are dozens of UN "things" that suck up funds and deliver very little for it. I will go out on a limb and say the UN Resident Coordinator System - which collects a 1 % "coordination levy" on EACH GRANT that EACH UN agency gets from donors - to the tune of a few 100 million USD each year. There is no bigger waste of funds for.a clown show that just creates more work for UN agencies on the ground - and is a solution looking for a problem that exists in their own minds using our pockets to fix it. Make UN coordination a rotating responsibility of UN agencies and provide a lean and task bound secretariat for that. By the way - with Microsoft Team - notes are taken at meetings automatically - so that task of the Secretariat is now gone. Easy peasy.
DeleteCoordination of the development programme is the role of the ministry and not the UN. The humanitarian coordination function that was for the short term and inspired the “industry” to churn cash and Jobs!
Deleteof course the ministry should play that role - but why would they waste much time on the UN family - who comprise a single % digit of aid? If China is building a hospital and roads and power supply - why would the government give a toss about UN WOMEN with a workshop or the DCT of 100,000 USD from UNICEF for which they need to sign several forms, endure HACT assessment, spot-checks and harassment? The UN becomes less relevany by the minute as the world moves into a different gear. If the UN cannot coordinate itself without a pompous UNRC at D2 level - with a team of P5 and P4 coordinators and economists working only for the UNRC - then we are truly lost.
DeleteDoes anyone know if the USA has retained membership of PAHO?
ReplyDelete@Richard. According to my AI, PAHO is the regional office for the Americas of the World Health Organization (WHO) but is legally a separate entity with its own constitution and membership rules. Even though the U.S. has initiated steps to withdraw from the WHO itself (scheduled for 22 January), it has not given any formal notice to leave PAHO, and remains a participating member of that regional health agency.
DeleteSo the U.S. remains a PAHO member. But I am not sure that Trump or his administration are as smart as my AI.
