Greetings from Baquer

Tom McDermott <mcdermott.tom@gmail.com> Mon, Dec 31, 2018, 1:26 PM to UNICEF Dear friends, At this time when we are celebrating the end of 2018 and exchanging new year's greetings for 2019, I thought it appropriate to share these greetings to all of us from Baquer Namazi. As you know, Baquer remains at home under house arrest and on a temporary 'medical furlough' while serving his 10 year prison sentence in Iran. This 'furlough' is currently under review by the authorities, who may at some point decide to return him once again to prison. His younger son, Siamak, remains in Evin Prison, now in his third year of a similar sentence. Earlier this month Ute Deseniss-Gros reminded me that we had not sent greetings to Baquer on December 3rd, his 82nd birthday. I then wrote to Baquer via his eldest son in Dubai. A couple weeks later I received this response from Baquer. His response to me was cut short - perhaps due to action by censors - but included were cop

The Significance of 20 Novermber

Like most former unicef staff and retirees I was very pleased to read about plans for celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of the Convention on Child Rights on 20 November 2019. This was indeed an iconic occurence in unicef's long and illustrious career in improving the welfare of children around the world. On the other hand, this upcoming celebration should also take into account the other notable events that occured on the same date, November 20 th. In order to refresh and emphasize unicef's historical evolution it might be appropriate to consider highlighting the following: The 65 th anniversary of 20 November 1954; the UN resolved to call this day "the Universal Children's Day" in celebration of activities aimed at assisting children around the world; The 60 th anniversary of 20 November 1959; the UN General Assembly adopted "the Declaration on the Rights of the Child", the main formal precursor to the CRC; The 40 th anniversary of the "Interna

GSA End of the Year Letter

GLOBAL STAFF ASSOCIATION 27 December 2018 Dear colleagues, It is the time of year when we take a break to spend time with family and friends and to ring in the new year. It is also a time for reflection. We ushered in the year with a change of guard at the top. Ms. Henrietta H. Fore took office as the UNICEF Executive Director on 1st January 2018. As the year is over, the ED is due for a performance assessment! In the course of the year, the ED has travelled extensively and interacted with many staff. Based on these interactions, I am happy to report that the feedback from colleagues has been very positive. Some of the words used to describe ED Fore are kind, caring, sincere, trustworthy, genuine, humble, motherly, soft-spoken but firm, visionary, approachable, good listener. And the list goes on. To sum it up, her performance has been outstanding! In my time as GSA Chairperson, 2018 has had the most number of challenges, but it has also had the most achievements for staff. And in thi

The Staff Member I Want : Sam Spurgeon Keeny 1951 / Tom McDermott

The Staff Member I Want - ‘Sam’ Spurgeon Keeny  Apropos of our recent discussion on UNICEF’s lack of of staff skills in anthropology and cultural sensitivity, one wonders what we lost along the way. Especially so when reading what EAPRO Regional Director ‘Sam’ Keeny in 1951 sent to Hq at a time when the office was desperately in need of field officers. “ Out of our experience to date in WHO / UNICEF projects, plus observations of the work of other agencies with similar problems, we tentatively offer the following tests of a good man (or woman) for the job out here: He is free from color prejudice - not only in words, but in the way he lives...Putting this principle into practice means getting to know people in their homes, as well as in business and associating with them socially as well as officially. He knows that one of the most important know-hows is how to get along with people of different background from his own. He acts on the basis that whatever the custom is, it is the c
