Insights from Outside the Bubble: The Minefield

By Detlef Palm The greatest risk to mankind, as we have come to learn, is Covid-19 and its mutants. Scientists work tirelessly to reduce the risk of more people dying prematurely from the virus. Politicians struggle for survival. We do what we think is best. The fight against Covid-19 is the  greatest collective risk management effort  of our civilization; it requires  everyone  to be part of it. Let me recall some other risks that humankind managed to manage. The risk of dying from cold was mitigated by taming fire. Seatbelts and speed limits reduce the risk of getting injured in a car crash. Clocks reduce the risk of missing an appointment or wasting time at the bus stop. When it is cloudy, you take the umbrella to reduce the risk of getting wet. The risk of dying of boredom is mitigated through television, and the risk of lonesomeness is allayed through social media, including the XUNICEF network of former UNICEF staff. Risks lurk around every corner, and our brain is constantly bus

Today and Tomorrow - A new definition of oxymoron - Sustainable Development: Ramesh Shrestha

A new definition of oxymoron Our focus has been on development and not on sustainability Thanks to Madam Gro Harlem Brundtland for popularising the idea of sustainable development in her report ‘Our Common Future’. It was a four-year study report of World Commission on  Environment and Development launched by the United Nations (UN) in 1983. The report defined sustainable development as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs . The basic premise is that the world community needs to find an equitable way to balance development for human prosperity without damaging the environment for future generations, a noble idea of social and environmental justice. The UN launched Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in 2015 with 17 goals and 169 targets to be met by 2030 as a successor to the Millennium Development Goals. We need ambition and optimism to be successful in life and I guess same holds true for countries and organis

The Soliloquy of a Postage Stamp #14: Fouad Kronfol

The SILVER ANNIVERSARY, contd. Our readers will be pleased to learn that this is the final group of philatelic materials issued by countries to commemorate UNICEF's 25th Anniversary.I am completing this milestone's commemoration in order to give time and space for other important milestones like the International Year of the Child,( IYC), the 40th anniversary as well as CSDR issues. The West African country of Togo issued this interesting set of 7 stamps in order to commemorate the United Nations on its 25th anniversary as well as some of the other UN Specialized Agencies.. Each stamp shows a different organization, starting with ILO, FAO, UNESCO, the UN, UNICEF (see arrow), UPU, and WHO. The Pacific Ocean island of Tonga issued some very original sets of stamps for UNICEF's anniversary.I decided to show all three sets because they are quite colorful and different from other nations' stamps. This first set has the same design on all five stamps..showing a boy sitting
