Gianni Murzi: Istanbul - Welcome to My Bakery

Credit: Gianni Murzi - Istanbul Series   February 2019 - I was visiting the Balat neighborhood, when I came across this bakery. Its owner welcomed me to enter and look at his shop. XUNICEF: Update on the Survey of Members

Background In early April the Executive Director reached out to retirees to ask their involvement and help in UNICEF's efforts against the impacts of Covid-19. XUNICEF's team of focal points collected ideas from the membership and sent back to the ED a number of areas in which we could help , as well as areas in which UNICEF could help us to help them in this effort. Updating contacts and Identifying Volunteers We sent out to all members a request that they update their contact details, tell us whether they wanted to share their contacts with UNICEF, and whether they were able or willing to help. So far 222 members have responded. 167 have said 'Yes' they will help. 43 were 'Undecided'.  We hope that the so far 'undecided' will join if and when UNICEF clarifies the help they need. If you did not receive the form or did not respond, here is the form to fill. Those who responded live in 48 different countries. Establishing National XUNICEF Networks We hav

David Bull: Partnering with the UK Natcom on Children in Lockdown

Hi all See below the email from Unicef UK on the Children in Lockdown Campaign. Great to see that 15,000 people have signed up (hopefully a good few as a result of XUNICEFers actions). The next step in the campaign is a collection of personal messages to the PM (see below). Here is the message I have sent: "Children and young people are not particularly vulnerable to Covid-19, but they have made very substantial sacrifices in support of those who are. This needs to be recognised and their voices need to be heard as we consider how best to emerge from the current stage of lockdown, and how to protect both vulnerable people and the rights and futures of our children and young people." I hope you can add your voices again. Thanks and best wishes David Rebecca Dallison, UNICEF UK Campaigns David, this is what children think about lockdown Can you help us tell the Prime Minister? \ View online 62% of UK children are worried about the impacts of coronavirus on their lives David, t

Discussion: Steve Umemoto and others: What can we retirees do about the US and WHO?

Credit: Getty Images Steve Umemotos I wonder if there is any role the Americans amonst us might play in assuring members of WHO and its community, that it is only a rougue US Administration that is withdrawing, not the US as a nation. Could we encourage any and every health and medical association and NGO in the country to communite their continued interest in cooperation and commuication? Could we encourage the media to cover the many roles WHO plays and why health and medical experts across America value its work and its networking? Could we communicate with congressmen, senators and others? Our voice may be small, but perhaps we could contribute to what should be a avalanche of support. Perhaps e could even ask the informal advice of the UNICEF ED. Perhaps there are some things should cannot say in her role, but we can. Any views? Steve Leila Bisharat Yes we can do all of that Steve! Be safe! Be well! Be kind! Leila T. Bisharat, Ph.D. Robert Cohen Yes, we really should do all

UNICEF: U-Reporters and Covid-19

U-Reporters mobilize to fight COVID-19 UNICEF-supported U-Report on the Move expands to connect refugees, migrants and other young people across Italy Angela Hawke 15 April 2020 What do young people need in the COVID-19 crisis? Clear information, but also strong connections with each other at a time of stress and uncertainty. As the lockdown continues, the UNICEF-supported U-Report on the Move initiative has expanded its work to connect refugees, migrants and other young people across Italy. And now its U-Reporters are playing their part in the fight against the disease. UNICEF launched the digital platform U-Report on the Move in 2017 as part of the wider refugee and migrant response in Italy. The platform enables unaccompanied children and adolescents arriving in Italy to speak out on the issues that matter to them, to share concerns and questions and to receive information that helps them find their way in their new country. Through Facebook messenger, U-Report subscribers reach ou
