By Alisha Haridasani Gupta Emma Goldberg The New York Times 5 min View Original A quarter century after the Beijing World Conference on Women, political leaders, corporate executives and activists convened again to address gender equality. Equality is one-half.” — Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, executive director of U.N. Women In Her Words is available as a newsletter. Sign up here to get it delivered to your inbox . World leaders don’t often gather with the sole purpose of investing money in women’s advancement. They don’t even typically gather for major discussions on the issue; it seems to happen only about once every quarter-century. The last time was in 1995 for the Beijing World Conference on Women. That was when Hillary Clinton, the first la

A Sporadic Commentator - Go to the Security Council. And, Good Luck : Agop Kayayan

More and more the world is realizing and acting out of the UN. You will see more and more direct negotiations between countries or fighting factions within the same country. When you know that the balance of your storekeeper is working against you, you eventually change and buy from a more decent one. The Security Council is an old reminiscence of a comedy gone stale. The Days of Tranquility worked so smoothly because they were negotiated out of the UN..by that little organization of the UN. A child eyed head of UNICEF dreamed of it. Suggested it to the President of El Salvador… I am more and more convinced that for our purposes we are much better off dealing with the sides in conflict. Our messages are sincere. We do not take sides, We want to help children in all sides. We do not want children harmed. People in armed conflict do not trust others. The brother or sister might by from the “other” side. ( It was the case in Central America). They would trust us, with some serious convin

Welcome to Our New Members in June 2021

We are delighted to welcome  new members to XUNICEF in June. If we overlooked your name, please let us know. Want to find out who else is already a member?   Just click on the 'Members Directory' in the sidebar or click here . Need someone's email address?   Contact the Network Administrator, Oscar Fernandez ( ofernandez@xunicef.com ) or contact the editors at News and Views ( xunicef.news.views@gmail.com ). Why don't we post the email addresses of all members?   Some members do not want their addresses to become public.  Also, we have had experiences in the past when someone copied the list and used it for advertising.  This could become even worse if someone outside XUNICEF used the list and the list became available to hackers and spammers.  For that we reason, we ask that you contact us for someone's address.

A Little History - Actor, Social Worker, Teacher, Adviser of the EDs - The Many Faces of Herman : Tom McDermott

Many of us came to know him only through the Senior Staff Seminars - a moment when staff, young and old, junior and senior, might be invited once in their careers to attend a seminar somewhere in the world - a unique opportunity to step outside our normal roles, study and discuss a field of interest but about which we knew little. We emerged from those seminars refreshed and challenged, and with a new network of colleagues similarly charged. Yet Herman was much more for UNICEF than simply the organizer of seminars. Senior Advisor to three UNICEF Executive Directors, Herman Stein, had a 21 year career with UNICEF - who would take time from his teaching duties to work with UNICEF whenever needed.   At his retirement in 1981, Jim Grant described Herman as "guide, philosopher, and teacher to Executive Directors and to staff - a man who brought not just academic knowledge, but also a profound understanding of the value of people." Among his many other intellectual contributio

Jeanne Vickers, RIP : Hans Olsen / Jesper Morch / Doreen Lobo

29/09/1924 to 23/06/2021   We are deeply saddened to announce that Jeannie Vickers, passed peacefully at her home in Geneva on 23 June 2021. Jeannie, probably one of the oldest XUNICEF colleagues, would have turned 97 this September. Jeannie joined UNICEF Geneva in 1972 where she initiated the Development Education (Dev-Ed) Programme. A passionate voice on children’s and women’s issues, she worked closely with UNICEF’s National Committees, vigorously advocating for the need to develop deeper understanding of health, education and other related children’s and women’s issues. Although Jeannie retired in 1984, she continued to advocate and actively support the production of development education materials through the Women and Development group which she established in 1980. In 2004, twenty years later, her work remained alive; she was honored and recognized at the annual reunion of UNICEF National Committees with an Award. Jeannie is survived by her son, Paul, his wife Rebecca and thei

Is UNICEF Attacking Home Schooling in Brazil? : Washington Examiner

UN agency attacks homeschooling By Michael Donnelly Washington Examiner 4 min View Original UNICEF’s top education officer in Brazil has launched a vituperative attack on homeschooling, opposing a proposed law that would recognize home education as a legal option for Brazilian parents. Homeschooling is flourishing in Brazil in the absence of national regulation. However, in 2018, Brazil’s Supreme Court stated that while homeschooling was a constitutionally acceptable practice, a federal law recognizing it was needed. Families who homeschool in Brazil have been working to obtain legal recognition for 25 years. Numerous bills have been proposed in the last decade, but none of them have been taken up by the National Congress, Brazil’s federal legislature. However, these efforts are now gaining momentum. Brazil’s recently elected president, Jair Bolsonoro, pledged upon taking office to work to legalize homeschooling, and a recent change in the leadership of the National Congress resulted i

Only 3 % of South Sudan Likely Vaccinated by Next Month : The Sun

Irish UNICEF volunteer - Dara Johnson on Vaccination Challenge By Nicola Bardon thesun.ie 3 min View Original JUST three per cent of South Sudan could be vaccinated against Covid by next month, an Irish volunteer there has revealed. Chief of water Dara Johnson is working with the charity in landlocked South Sudan, which is surrounded by other African nations with soaring cases. He said: “We’ve a population of 11million so we got 132,000 doses in May and that’s targeting about three per cent of the population. The whole idea is to get things up and running because you don’t want to get vaccines that expire, you want to get a system in place. “So last week we transported everything out to the ten states around the country and the whole process has now started. “The worry for a landlocked country such as South Sudan is how the nations nearby are dealing with the pandemic. “All the countries around are on the red list and Uganda especially is seeing a big surge in Covid cases. I don’t kn
