Our former ED, Henrietta Fore, is back in the news, reflecting on the period in which she was managing both the US State Department's Foreign Assistance Bureau and USAID.  Although she laments the loss of so many experienced staff at USAID, she remains a supporter of the consolidation.  Opening statement to the September 2021 Executive Board by Henrietta Fore Thank you, Mr. President and welcome to all members of the Executive Board. “When I first walked into UNICEF House as Executive Director in January 2018, I knew millions of children in every corner of the globe were facing incredible challenges: violence, conflict, poverty, inequality, discrimination, and poor access to essential services. “In the years since, these challenges have persisted and even intensified. Dear Colleagues, As we enter a new year, I wanted to share some thoughts about our priorities and strategies for 2021. 2020 was an unprecedented year in many ways. In a matter of weeks, it transformed how we think about, and deliver, our programming for children. Against this challenging backdrop, we have reviewed our progress and have reconfirmed our 2020 priorities for 2021: Distance Learning to save futures, Immunization to save lives, Water to save communities, and Mental Health to save families. Our work will continue to be shaped by the ongoing response to COVID-19 and our efforts to help governments recover and rebuild all the systems children need in the wake of the pandemic — systems that can respond to future pandemics and threats such as antimicrobial resistance. We  welcomed Henrietta Fore  as UNICEF’s new Executive Director. She  replied saying that she looked forward  to working closely with us. We also said our thanks and goodbyes to Tony Lake, while at the same time  inviting him to join us in XUNICEF . Tony worked closely with us in the campaign for Baquer Namazi’s freedom.
