“Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live”
A Tribute to a National and Social Icon

With heavy yet faithful hearts, filled with hope, the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) in Palestine—represented by its president, members of its board, administrative and general bodies, executive directors, staff, and member associations—mourns the loss of a prominent and inspiring Palestinian figure, daughter of Jerusalem, a leader of goodness, perseverance, strength, love for all, educator of generations, and loyal friend, former General Secretary of the YWCA,

Doris Salah
Doris, a pillar of the association and a remarkable personality to all who knew her, carried a beautiful smile that radiated positive energy and left a lasting impact wherever she served or was present. With her big heart and love for people, life, and community service, she influenced many young women and men, generously sharing her wisdom and advice to enlighten minds and hearts.
Doris passed away in the United States after a long journey of service within the association and the broader Palestinian community. She left a distinctive mark on numerous educational and cultural projects and initiatives across the YWCA branches. Her contributions extended to the Peace and Justice Council, networks of various NGOs, regional and international conferences, and amplifying the voices of women and the Palestinian cause.
Having volunteered with the association from a young age, Doris later served as General Secretary for four decades, continuing her service afterward as a volunteer on the association’s board and its committees. She was also a member of the World YWCA Board.
Doris dedicated her life with sincerity and commitment to advocating for peace, justice, national rights, including women's rights in Palestine. Even after her retirement, she remained active in advocacy groups for just peace in Palestine, through platforms like the United Nations and within churches and ecumenical circles worldwide.
We mourn Doris's passing and extend our condolences to her sisters, Gizeil and Rima, her entire family, and members, colleagues and friends who shared her journey over the years. Doris tirelessly fought for the rights of marginalized groups, particularly women and young women in Palestine, and defended these rights with strength and determination to make the world a better place. We pledge to continue carrying the message and values she lived for. Farewell, Doris.

"The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord."

  2. Dear Rima, Allah Yerhamha ! She was really an outstanding personage and Nadia and I vividly remember the very pleasant evening we spent with both of you at your Dag Hammarsjkold apartment. We also cannot forget the delicious Palestinian cooking that she was famous for, of which we partook and enjoyed. Her pleasant and open personality endeared her to us even if it was that one time.
    May She Rest in Peace.

  9. Dearest Rima,

We don't know what to say. We had just finished our thanksgiving message to you and Doris when we read that Doris had left us. We cannot imagine the depth of your sorrow and wish we had words to comfort you. Doris was your sister and, through you, she became ours too. As they say in French, she was "a force tranquille". A sweet but ferocious fighter of injustice.

She will be very much missed. May her soul rest in eternal peace. You, Gisèle and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

    Sincerest condolences, Saad and Hoda

  19. My dear Rima,

I am so very sad to learn about the passing of your dear sister Doris.

Binata and I recall our multiple meetings with her - and her graceful hospitality at your apartment, at the UN & UNICEF. She was such a lovely sister — not just to you but to me and so many of our UN/UNICEF colleagues as well. I can imagine how hard it must be for you to cope with life without Doris. I can also imagine how hard it must have been for Doris and you in recent months to witness the horrific tragedy that is befalling the Palestinian people. Please accept my heartfelt sympathies. May Doris' noble heart rest in eternal peace, and may you have the strength to cope with her loss.

    Cordially, Kul G
