From Your Editors

Don't miss the full video of Kul Gautam's excellent TEDx talk In Defense of Multilateralism and the UN.  You will also enjoy the stimulating and thoughtful HDPI presentation by Cornelius Williams - UNICEF's Chief of Child Protection on Emerging Threats to Children.

Also this week Agop Kayayan calls for XUNICEF to mount a campaign for equitable distribution of vaccines for COVID-19 - not only between countries but within countries.   Farid Rahman writes to us on the importance to plan early for UN staff, dependents, and retirees to receive vaccinations against COVID-19.  This is perhaps not a major question for those living in more developed parts of the world, but likely a serious problem in many of UNICEF's programme countries.  Also, Habib Hammam shares an article about the man behind Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine and many readers respond with comments.

Columns

Gianni Murzi is back this week with his guide to what's important to read on health issues -  Healthy Reading.

Detlef Palm is also back this week with #2 in his series Insights from Outside the Bubble

Comments

Some members are making good use of the Comments section that appears below each article. There you can comment on the article, but you can also reply to someone else's comment. Your comment should appear immediately (although you may need to refresh the page to see it).

This week we are including a Comments page listing the many comments received since 19 November.  We don't plan this to be a regular feature, but rather hope that it may encourage you to comment on articles on which you'd like to share your opinion.

Keep in mind that if you want to start a new discussion, pose a question or announce your point of view, you can send it to us at xunicef.news.views@gmail.com   We will post it for you. Then check back later to see the comments and replies of others.

Ideas we are working on

Discussion Forum

We are still working hard to create a discussion forum, where members can directly engage with other members on topics of their interest, suggest ideas or ask questions. We have been encountering technical difficulties, but are still hopeful that we can integrate such a forum on our website.

Help page

We are also working on a help page, to make it easier for member to navigate our website and its different functions.

The December Quarterly

Please don't forget to send us your articles and photos for our December Quarterly on the UN@75.  We have already received drafts from quite a few of you.  Others have promised to send their drafts by the deadline of 1 December.  We hope, however, for some good surprises - articles and photos sent by those from whom we have not yet heard.

Subscribe directly

Tired of getting too many unwanted emails from the XUNICEF network?  Seven members have so far taken up our option of a direct subscription to News and Views, thus allowing them to avoid the periodic tsunamis of emails sent to 'allmembers'.  If you would like to drop out of the general XUNICEF network, but still receive the Weekly Update and the Quarterly Newsletters, you can subscribe directly here.

Our Artist of the Week - Samir Sobhy

Samir Sobhy contributed to our September 2019 Quarterly.  Samir is an artist, poet and writer.  Many of our XUNICEF artists took up art seriously only after retirement.  Samir's career, however, extends from his childhood throughout his working years.   We enjoyed his article A Long Career of Art through My Travels so much, that we are republishing it this week.  Click here to see Samir's gallery and read of his jouney through art.

The Week Ahead

Calendar

This week, instead of listing coming events for the week ahead along with a link to click, we are showing the 'live' version of the XUNICEF calendar.  Let us know what you think of this new format.

Is something missing? Let us know, please.  Keep in mind too that we learn of many events just before an event takes place, so check the back during the week.  Better yet, copy the XUNICEF calendar into your own calendar, so that events are updated automatically when they are posted.

Clusters

The Academics Cluster met on Friday, 27 November.  As soon as we receive news of the meeting, we will share it here.
