The potential adverse effects of AI have been in the news for a few weeks. People everywhere have been experimenting with AI for good or bad. While the middle level technocrats are worried about the potential dangers of AI, the CEOs of various AI companies are simply looking at the financial returns from AI. In this day & age of dying multilateralism there is unlikely to be a global mechanism of controlling the use of AI. Eventually it will be up to the individuals to decide to use or not to use AI. Even the application of AI in business is certain to destroy normal business environments based on human thinking and logic. Just imagine the application of AI in the fishing industry. It will wipe out marine life within decades with overfishing, which is already bad enough.

ReplyDeleteThanks for this link. It is an interesting aspect of AI development which is not much talked about. There are certain other issues such as Anthropic, Amazon and two other AI giants buying in bulk all printed manuscripts, ancient publications, books, technical manuals published before 2024. They have digitised all these printed manuals and they have shredded all those printed products and converted to pulp. What it means is that anyone wanting these publications will have to buy digital copies with full copyright with a price set by them. It is like GMO seeds… It will make them multimillionaire.
DeleteAs examples given in the article these companies could collude and control the market to stay afloat whichever way possible. I am sure all governments and private institutions around the world using AI must be paying a premium price set by these companies. (a small example, globally the UN alone pay billions to Microsoft based on number of individual users in all UN offices. And there are millions of private companies who are renting MS products.) In the long run they will make it profitable.
But at societal level, whatever has been released and available for everyone is enough to manipulate the normal trajectory of children’s cognitive development.
Ramesh has identified several risks, such as market concentration, manipulation, copyrights, and employment, but the story about book destruction does not seem to be accurate. The argument for AI regulation does not need exaggeration.
