The Treaty of Westphalia in 1648 ended the Thirty Years war in Europe by establishing the founding principles of a modern world order based on state sovereignty and relations among states. These same principles are the founding principles of the United Nations and have continued to form the basis of world order. Until now.
The Trump administration and the powers behind it, especially some of the minions of the multi-billionaire class, are taking steps to change world order from being based on state sovereignty to being based on the interests of the biggest private sector companies in the United States. Like Amazon, Microsoft, META, Musk and others like them. Each one of these companies has financial prowess and capacities greater than most sovereign states, and technologies which are essential for daily life around the world. These mega companies and the Trump administration have made an alliance to use the financial and military prowess of the United States to acquire or establish control over valuable natural resources and any valuable assets wherever they are found in the United States and other countries. US diplomacy would help these mega companies make lucrative deals for assets in other much weaker countries even if such deals do not favour the people and long term interests of these counties.
For governments that do not play along, there is economic pressure, gunboat diplomacy and regime change. End result: American companies would gain control of essential assets in many countries whether it is oil, minerals, agricultural resources, touristic sites, consumer utilities (like water and electricity). What is wrong with this is that while sovereign countries have governments which are responsible to the people and people’s well-being, the big mega companies have no such responsibility and are not accountable to the people.
It is no accident that the Trump administration has assailed the United Nations and rendered its human rights, international justice, and peace making capacities much weaker including the Security Council. The current US administration is promoting a mantra “from United Nations to United Companies”! It is not as if a world order based on companies’ interests is conducive to world peace.
The White House is clearly supporting the mega companies and they in turn are having major say in the workings of the White House which is consolidating power in its own hands while congress is passive. Under the pretext of controlling illegal immigration, the American people are getting accustomed to seeing military people in their streets.
Trump’s White House has emasculated the Republican party, assaulted academia, taken control of the justice system and cowed mainstream media. The assault on democracy by the White House and the mega companies is in full swing. We do not have to count the waves to know that we have come to the sea.
