NEPAL DISASTER: An Update and Contacts of XUNICEF staff in Nepal Who Are Helping by Bijaya Rajbhandari

 

Dear Colleagues,
As you have heard there has been a disaster in the northern part of Nepal bordering China with a torrent of rain and debris which has swept thousands of houses, schools, health posts and the Hydropower. This river houses most of the hydropower, about 1000 MW of electricity being cut off from the main grid. Up to 30 August, 823 people have died, 4500 people are missing, out of which 476 are foreigners who have gone for trekking and pilgrimage to Tibet. Access to Rasuwa is an issue as the roads have been washed away. Compared to the earthquake of 2015 which affected 14 districts, but the flood of 2026 affected 3 districts, it is much more fierce which affected a large number of people and health and learning insitututions.

UNICEF Nepal is very much on the ground supporting the affected population. As Ex UNICEF staff, we met immediately on 28 August to assess the situation and raise the funds among the Ex UNICEF staff within Nepal and abroad. As of 30 August , we have collected US$ 6666.00 from within Nepal and abroad. We are sending today 500 sets of clothes for the women and children immediately
