UN Persons of the Year : PassBlue

Article shared by Kul Gautam and Niloufar Pourzand

Francesca Albanese and Riyad Mansour have been among the most visible voices of conscience for those of us who have been following the annus horribilis for the Palestinian people in Gaza and elsewhere.

Readers of PassBlue made the right choice in nominating them as UN Persons of the Year for 2024 followed by the embattled head of UNRWA, Philippe Lazzarini.

Secretary-General of the UN António Guterres cut a hapless figure in this and the Ukraine crisis. He tried hard and stuck to principles but failed to make much impact—except for the Black Sea Grain Deal, in which he played an influential role.

Perhaps the "honor" for the most dishonorable ambassador to the UN in 2004 should go to Linda-Thomas Greenfield (and her Deputy Robert Wood) casting her vetoes in defense of Israel. I felt a combination of pity & contempt for Linda-Thomas, an otherwise decent diplomat whom Biden and Blinken put in a position to defend the indefensible.

Undoubtedly, the other most dishonorable diplomat was the Russian Ambassador Vasily Alekseyevich Nebenzya, whose torrent of vetoes at the UN Security Council (defending Russia's indefensible invasion of Ukraine) reminded one of the dour "Mr. Nyet" Andrei Gromyko of the Cold War USSR.

  1. BRAVA !BRAVA ! Francesca, she truly deserves to be honoured as UN Person of the Year. Her reporting has been professional, direct, and objective throughout; despite her being vilified by many she remained true to her task and to her principles as a UN staffer.
