Taking Over Panama, Canada and Greenland Is Nonsense : Doug Bandow / Other News

It might be of interest to many former colleagues to know about the possible plans to enlarge the USA, or, alternatively, to get rid of the territories (which of course would be of special fear here in the Virgin Islands. It also raises the question of how American are the Virgin Islands? Most visitors see a lot of Danish architecture and history, but besides the Dollar and the flag and McDonalds and English spoken, there isn't much of the USA (No voting for the president, either). I am trying to get visibility for ALexander Hamildton, who lived and worked on St.Croix as a teenager (1765 -1772) and it could establish a link to the mainland. Our airport used to be called ALexander Hamilton Airport, but then politicians insisted to name it after a local Kuskeegee flyer.

'There is a better argument for the US selling off (or making independent) some of its possessions, such as American Samoa, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. They have only limited political representation in Washington and no obvious reason to remain part of the United States.'

Cheers,
Horst.

Summary
President-elect Donald Trump has floated expansionist ideas to acquire Panama, Canada, and Greenland. He views the Panama Canal as a vital U.S. asset, proposed Canada join the U.S. as the 51st state, and reiterated his desire to buy Greenland. These ideas are impractical, would violate sovereignty, and distract from domestic issues. Greenland and Canadian leaders rejected Trump’s ideas. Trump’s expansionist ideas could reignite debates over statehood vs. independence for US territories, such as Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, and American Samoa, and increase concerns over renewed colonialism.
