The official death toll in Gaza has just passed 40,000 people. This however is only a count of deaths in which relatives have been able to identify the deceased. It does not cover the many who are buried under rubble or whose bodies are unrecognizable. Moreover, it does not account for the many past and future deaths due to destroyed health-care infrastructure; severe shortages of food, water, and shelter; and the population's inability to flee to safe places.
According to a study in the Lancet, even by very conservative counting from past conflicts"...it is not implausible to estimate that up to 186 000 or even more deaths could be attributable to the current conflict in Gaza. Using the 2022 Gaza Strip population estimate of 2 375 259, this would translate to 7·9% of the total population in the Gaza Strip.

Here we have, again, more statistics on the number of deaths of innocent people in Gaza. In fact there are two articles back to back in this blog. Have we all become so inured to such information that we simply gloss over it and turn to other matters? We are talking about women and children mainly, the principal objectives of our organization and our careers and yet it seems that nothing seems to work to stop the carnage. All politicians are talking about is a cease fire, hostage exchange and more humanitarian aid (not forthcoming so far), while many more hundreds are being killed daily. Has the civilized world sunk so low?
