George and Stewart had been colleagues in Nepal for many years. Together they did many week-long hikes to remote UNICEF programme villages. In 2007, while in retirement, they reunited again to climb the highest year-round village of Nepal at 12,000 feet in Manang. They made a film of this adventure for their grandchildren – and gave it the Yeti theme to have a pretext for their journey.
Detlef said: This is exactly Stewart McNab as I remember him from his time as programme officer in Somalia in the nineteen-eighties. Stewart was always fun and good for a joke. This video is a real treasure!
Stewart – in his role in a HAMS play in Kathmandu in 1979/80 – was Coupler, The Matchmaker in ‘The Relapse’ (recently celebrated on XUNICEF as ‘The Play with a Bang’). Rehearsals for the play were sometimes difficult as we were always laughing at Stewart’s antics. His creativity was wonderful, so I am not surprised that he and George made the film and lucky are the grandchildren for whom it was made. What a treasure, and thank you George.
