Hello colleagues - greetings. Being a miser with the words, I would say it straight. The ED's briefing note should say that (i) there has been too much talking in UNICEF. It should be replaced with 'doing' what UNICEF professes. 'Showing by doing' strategy was buried long time back (ii) tell the donors (sugar coated development partners) that UNICEF too has made / makes mistakes but it is upfront about it and will ensure that mistakes are not repeated (iii) the rising graph of funding is no indication of meaningful work and lastly (iv) the new ED from the US should know that she/he comes at a cost of another equally/more deserving candidate from the developing world. If the ED is perceptive, this should suffice. If not, even a ten pager would make no difference. It is sad that the ED positions in various UN bodies have been cornered by few countries. Cartel mentality anyone? I think I have used too many words. Adios.

It's surely a strange anomaly of history that the one Member State never to ratify the CRC is the one that always chooses the ED. If necessary, as it sometimes has been, a strong brief on the significance and workings of the CRC, its Committee and UNICEF's 'expert advice' role would be at the top of the list.

Great photos from your Journey through Namibia, which made me "homesick." I travelled almost the whole Land of the Brave as the UN RC, except for the Skeleton coast. We never got there, just close by. I did however get to the Diamond exploration fields in Orangemund on a special permit, and crossed the huge area between Orangemund and Luderitz. Namibia is an amazing country, which should be on everbody's bucket list. ☺️🇸🇸

In the news it's kind of discriminatory that India and China are singled out while the US which also did not sign to phase out the coal is never mentioned. Similarly Australia which is one of the largest producers of coal is not mentioned either! How can one rely on any news media?

Detlef, indeed a good summary of how the UN is looked at by many people around the world. I remember vividly the discussions with relatives and friends when I still was in active service. I used to say that at least, the Un brings together the leaders and people from different corners of our world, so that they can see and learn, that the others are also human beings! Not better, not worse but different!

Thanks Gianni what a wonderful small tour which could have lasted for 1,000 of photos. We had # 2 son on school exchange in Ireland in 2018 so we came across from Australia with older son and had a micro trip to Rome. We asked the two sons where they would like to go and both said Rome. Why? Culture. History. Food. Food. Food, and food was the response - and they were not disappointed.

Indeed, no system is performing the way it should including Capitalism. If we are to go by original ideology of communism centralised governance and centralised state-run economy form the backbone of the system. But as the Capitalism is taking over global finance, trade and banking through any means, and also closing in on all forms of governance including social democracies, the last remining communist countries have no choice but to adapt their economies with pragmatism. As the Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping famously highlighted ancient Chinese saying in 1997 ‘it does not matter if a cat is black or white as long as it can catch a mouse’. It is a way of logicality when you are surrounded by adversaries.

ReplyDeleteDear Gulbadan— I guess I met Baquer three times and I think I was invited at his house, where we possibly met, either in Nairobi in 1988, or in Egypt around 1994-1995, or in Tehran when a MENA Region Rep’s Meeting was organised there under Sarojini Vittachi chair towards 1996/97. Does your recollection correspond? Let me know as I’m equally interested.

Thank you, Gianni for responding. Your brain is so much sharper than mine. Mine unfortunately is slowed a little by the car accident I was in 2 and half years ago. It wasn’t in Tehran. I have been to Tehran in 1970 on my way back to Kabul from Honolulu. When I went to Cairo Laila Bisharat was the Rep so it must have been in Nairobi. Baquir was alone, his beautiful wife must have been on travel some. We spent a couple of hours with him and had delicious Iranian meal. Those were lovely times. All the best! Gulbadan
