Dear Editors of XUNICEF News & Views,

I appreciate very much reading - XUNICEF News & Views - and also reading about the Ex-Unicefers Reunions whereof I attended even one in Italy several years ago.

Suject: Ex-UNICEF Reunions

With some more time in the Holyday Season, I would like to draw your attention to Ex-Unicef Gatherings from the GCO / PSD group of ex- UNICEF staff from the Regional Office in Geneva.

1. A first gathering called " GCO-Production Meeting" took place in Zurich in 1915 among 6 ex-staffers during a lunch and afternoon together.

2. A second gathering took place in Geneva / Fernez Voltaire in 1916 where ex-staff from GCO Marketing and Administration participated as well ( 24 persons). We had a lunch and afternoon in a good restaurant in Fernez Voltaire / France and met also for dinner at the UN Beach Club in Geneva.

3. A third gathering took place in Porto / Portugal in the first week of June this year. We, approx. 14 ex-staffers stayed for a few days together in a good hotel, with a guided tour through town, excursions, Fado-dinner, Portwine tasting and a lot of fun and good conversations during lunches and dinners and sometimes even afterwards. So, it seems to have reached very much the frame of Ex-Unicefers Reunions! A next gathering is planned to happen in 2020.

For myself, the GCO / PSD gatherings were more cosy, as the groups were smaller than the official reunions and I knew the participants through many years of working together which was less the case in the Reunion I attended in Italy, though I enjoyed this meeting with ex-colleagues as well.

If you want to include above information in one of your next N&V, I attach 2 fotos each from our second and third gatherings.

Subject: Life after UNICEF

If you are interested, I could write something about my life after UNICEF, where I worked before retirement a few months as Head of Procurement for the OPCW in The Hague, followed by working for the UN and organisations in Germany and The Netherlands as a consultant, followed by starting a gallery as my wife and I had painted so many pictures that we needed to put them somewhere!
My wife and I are actually involved in assisting 2 refugees from Syria, teaching English to a German lady and coaching 2 young ladies from Kirkistan through their apprendiceship to become professionals in nursing homes. I attach a copy of info re our gallery. Much needs to be done!

I wish you all a successful and healthy 2019!

Great work and fascinating subjects. You are the right man in the right place. I hope the more formal link via Nicolas Pron with UNICEF will make things even better. He told me in an email a few months ago that he hopes to be in Bangkok in March and we agreed to meet up for a pint. I will touch base with him then on how he sees the collaboration growing during 2019 and onwards.

I didn’t copy all X- UNICEF with this message as I know some members are a bit allergic to receiving heaps of emails, but could you please convey my congratulations and thanks to the editorial team.

Looking forward to staying in touch with the News & Views editions in 2019.

Have a happy Christmas and a wonderful 2019.

Wow ! Hearty Congratulations on a fantastic newsletter. I was so eager to read this, that I just did a “rush” job. I am so very impressed - as no doubt others are too. Given the calibre of our Ex UNICEF staff why should I be surprised?

You’ve covered a range of topics/interests to satisfy all. I will at leisure “digest” the contents including the web links.

I somehow missed the first issue ( is it possible to please send this to me) possibly with being away a lot since March. Thank you.

Would it be useful to have a “Letters to the Editor” section? Just a thought... or did I miss it in my hasty reading?

Thank you again for this incredible effort which I do realize requires carving out a big chunk of time to put together.

Warm wishes and enjoy summer.

Dear Fouad, Steve et all:
Thanks for the memories.
I am reminded of the episode that eventually led to converting ICEF to UNICEF.
Those of us who need to know, can read about Elanor Roosevelt's encounter in
Maggie Black's and Judy Spiegleman's books about UNICEF history.

Dear Fouad, dear all,

Thank you for reminding us that the manifestation of the CRC in 1989 would not have been possible without prior decades of action and achievement for children.

We will impress upon our colleagues that this history should be better integrated into the communication for the CRC commemoration.

Would you kindly let us know where you receive updates about CRC30 plans? We would like to take this channel into account for sharing information. Hope we can count on continued support from you for CRC30 efforts.

Best regards,

Michelle

Happy New Year Michelle ! Thanks for your email reply to my communication on CRC 2019. As you say, it is important for the current unicef staff to at least remember and to note that so many earlier accomplishments and events had occured that led up to where the present organization is positioned. In unicef this "institutional memory" has generally been weak, hence the concerns for reviving the History Project which our XUNICEF network has been pushing for. We are hoping that we will continue to interact with unicef through Nicolas Pron and others in our quest to keep both past and present staffers mutually informed of our organization's activites and development.

While I am with you I have a favour to request from you if it is not too complicated or time consuming: in late 1979 the unicef GSA hosted a goodbye party for the retiring Executive Director, Harry Labouisse and Eve Labouisse, at the UN Delegates Dining room, as I recall. At that time I was the Chair of GSA, hence my wife and I were the official" hosts" of the party. It was by all measures a very elegant and successful party, and I remember the Labouisses commenting that it was one of the most enjoyable events they had attended.

What I am looking for is any photographs taken at that event. I went through all my documents, albums and other unicef related paraphernalia but could not find anything on that evening or photos. I am quite sure that our archives must have a few pictures taken at that memorable evening. Would it be too difficult to check it out? I am also copying this to Scholastica and Grechen, for their info and assistance if possible.
Thank you in advance. Cheers.

Hi Michelle, it is not easy to find anything on the UN site with itts 800,000 items, most of which is related to UN matters, and not the other UN organizations. Since ours was a unicef affair I thought our own archives would be a more appropriate place to search for the photos..if photos there are !!!

Yes, we are all getting a lot of info on unicef in general, including the latest on CRC, from the XUNICEF network where a great deal of communication has been going on ever since we instituted the XUNICEF appelation, here in Montreal after a successful Reunion of Retirees which my wife and I hosted in 2008.

Of course many of the more recent retirees still have friends and colleagues with whom they are in contact and so this is another channel. Even I who retired in 1995 still communicate with a few current staff members on sundry matters...the network is very much alive and doing well. We do however, wish that serious efforts will be done to revivie the History Project and have hopes that Nicolas Pron will help speed up the process.
By the way on archival materials and Library matters, my earlier correspondence with the current Librarian was not very positive, as her answer was that unicef is moving into a new system and thus is unable to provide us with info on what the XUNICEF group can access..I guess this is the ECM you have mentioned. We hope once this is in place we wil have a system that the XUNICEF group can also access, both for past and for current information.
Cheers,

Dear Fouad,

Happy New Year to you, and to Scholastica and Gretchen as well!

UNICEF's strong brand and positive reputation was earned by its staff, partners and its historical achievements over 70 years, but UNICEF's culture has always been focused on getting things done and not praising its past accomplishments. Thankfully, until we revive the History project, we have the history monographs, archives that were managed by Adhiratha Keefe and Howard Dale and books like Maggie Black's and a handful of others.

We are working closely with Nicolas on the CRC and supporting with liaison with former staff, and would like to set up an efficient way to share information about CRC plans. It will help to know where you read about the plans, was it through the newsletter produced by Tom McDermott and other alumni or some other source?

Unicef has transitioned to an Enterprise Content Management system in which archival materials are now being managed. We can make a request for the images you are seeking, but be forewarned it may take a while. Since this event was held at the UN Delegates Dining room, perhaps you might find a photo in the UN photo library https://www.unmultimedia.org/photo/
United Nations Photo - unmultimedia.org
www.unmultimedia.org
UN Photo contains a selection of images from the United Nations photo collection, which contains approximately 800,000 photographs dating back to the mid-1940s chronicling the history of the Organization and its work.
Let us know if you find anything here.

Dear Tom,

Thank you for sharing Baquer's message. He and his wife are amazingly strong, I don't know how they maintain their courage and their good will.

I'm not the prayin' type but will think of Siamat every day and hope for his early release. Perhaps positive vibes will be as powerful as prayers.

All the best,

Dear Tom,

I can not get words to write to Baquer. What he is going through with his son is inhuman and painful . If our best wishes for them bring any solace and change their situation then we are praying daily for them .

I still hope the situation may change and he will be released without any condition .

May the new year bring some good news !

Dear Henrietta,

Wow, this is historic! It is perhaps the first time since the Jim Grant era that an incumbent UNICEF ED has received such glowing accolade from the staff.

"Some of the words used to describe ED Fore are kind, caring, sincere, trustworthy, genuine, humble, motherly, soft-spoken but firm, visionary, approachable, good listener. And the list goes on. To sum it up, her performance has been outstanding!"

Congratulations and best wishes, Ms. Fore!

Very sorry to learn that we have lost Jorge. Although it is a long time since we met in person, via XUNICEF emails Jorge played a great role in organizing current and former UN staff in Ecuador in the campaign for Baquer's freedom. Again, we news broke that the US had used foreign aid to force Ecuador's vote at the WHA on enforcement of the international code on breastmilk substitutes, Jorge took the lead in organizing UN colleagues and carrying the case with the MFA. After retirement Jorge stayed active in Quito co-authoring Ecuador's report on CRC implementation, and presenting various studies on issues such as changes in family structure, child prostitution, and so forth. We and the children of Ecuador will miss him. RIP

In fact it is a big lost for exunicefers in Ecuador, national and international. Jorge was a natural leader. He achieved to revitalize the almost dead UN retirees asociation and also the ex UNICEF group in Ecuador. In this quality he organized a group to document the impact of the UNICEF role in developing strategies and programmes in favour of the childhood in Ecuador for the past 40 yeras. We already miss Jorge, his nice personality, his constant preocupation for the child issues and the efective responses and his espontaneous and natural high sense of humor Editors https://www.blogger.com/profile/12870349464176358375 noreply@blogger.com tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1792133227804942853.post-5495156778661754462 2019-01-14T09:31:17.571-08:00 2019-01-14T17:42:05.294-08:00 Nancy Andrade-Castro

Dear Tom and all my very dear former colleagues and friends

As the new year sets in I want to express my best wishes for your health and well being and invite you to join me in my humble prayer for 2019 to usher in a process leading to a better, more caring and kinder world for all, especially for underprivileged children

I also ask you to pray for the freedom of my patriotic son and all those unjustly imprisoned throughout the world.

God be with all of you, always

Dear Baquer,

Thank you so much for your kind good wishes for the year ahead.

I have just forwarded your latest message to our colleagues, and I am sure many will want to send back their best wishes. I will collect these and forward them to you.

Two days ago I forwarded your earlier message to all our XUNICEF colleagues. I included your attachments on the updated proposal for Children as Zones of Peace in the conflict zones of the Middle East. It was heart-warming to see how firmly you remain dedicated to the work we all share for the children of the region.

Many have begun to reply, asking that I pass on to you and Effie, and all your family their own warm regards and wishes for good health, happiness and freedom. I am including here a few of the messages so far received.

I have also included below Fouad's note to all of us reminding all of us of the important anniversaries coming up this year.

Please know that we all remain deeply concerned for you and for Siamak. We keep you both always in our prayers.

Let me also add on behalf of Viviane, Dan and myself our very best wishes for the year ahead, and in particular for Siamak.

Tom

PS - I head a small group of XUNICEF colleagues who edit a quarterly newsletter for the retirees. Earlier this month we sent out our 4th edition. I have not been sending these to you as until now we had no email link. Please consider contributing an article or any other material for our next edition in March. Click here for the recent edition. Thanks Sree for calling our attention to the Economist report. Unfortunately, the web and print editions of the Economist and are slightly different, and the special report on childhood seems to appear only in the print edition. The issue would be an important one for the newsletter and for wider sharing on the XUNICEF network, but without a digital link this is not possible. Please keep an eye out in case the articles are later shared on the internet. Meanwhile, I assume the pages below are the key ones? - I tried to copy their text but the Economist blocks any digital copying. Best regards. Tom

I arrived back in Armenia this afternoon and do feel encouraged by your overall support for for the 2019 Reunion to be held here. We have more or less decided to appoint Hyur and are at the stage of spelling out our expectations to them more specifically so as to get the best deal. I should have more to share with you shortly, including the final itinerary with costs. I shall then be asking you to register your interest. It is important to have a realistic figure of the number who will be attending.

Do bear with me till I get back to you again shortly.

Dear All

I am pleased to attach our draft proposal for the next Reunion in Armenia. I have kept it short and brief at this stage. Subject to your approval, we shall be proceeding with competitive bidding to appoint a reliable and reputable tour operator to take it through under our oversee and with our close monitoring and advice.

We shall also be working on a detailed e-brochure at that stage.

Kindly take note that we have at best been able to put down only indicative costs at this stage based on discreet inquiries with hotels and tour operators in Armenia and Georgia. We have also kept some margin for the likelihood of fluctuations in dollar exchange rates over the next year.

We are made to understand that the estimated costs could be reduced with larger number of people subscribing for the event. We shall strive to get the best value for money without compromising on quality and comfort.

I am still in India and shall be returning to Armenia after the Christmas break in mid-January. I shall seek appointments with UNICEF Reps both in Armenia and Georgia upon my return. It will only be a courtesy call at this stage to let them know the possibility of the event.

I am touched by the overwhelming support and encouragement I have received from many of you. We now have the challenge to measure up to your expectations if approved.

My special thanks to Sree for the relentless help and guidance that she has provided me over the past few weeks based on her India Reunion experience.

Some of you have volunteered to help me through the preparations if, when and where needed. I am touched by your kindness. It gives me courage to be reassured that there are others that I can rely upon for help and guidance where needed.

I shall be looking forward to your thoughts, comments and further suggestions on the proposal.

Warm regards

Hello,

I would like to thank anyone who put me back in the mailing list. I will appreciate it if you include me as a participant/registered email address in the google groups, so I can read the discussion on the web.

I am the widow of Ralph Diaz, and we were happy to participate in the Budapest and Bali Reunions. Ralph died in November 2015, just a few weeks after the Budapest reunion. I remember the discussion as to whether partners of ex-UNICEFers could participate in these reunions, and the vote was affirmative.

My daughter and I are interested in joining the Armenia and the Georgia reunion this year. She has asked me if I could give her the tentative dates and how long this reunion would last, so that she can put in her application for leave at her office. Apparently, it appears that they have to submit their travel dates at the beginning of the year.

Here's to seeing everyone in 2019!

Former UNICEF Representative, Djibouti and

former Deputy Representative, Honduras and Guatemala

Dear colleagues,

It is with great sorrow that I announce the untimely passing away of Jorge Mejia, our former colleague, on 22 December 2018.

Jorge, a national of Ecuador, served under different capacities in Latin America, Djibouti, Rwanda and at New York Headquarters. Following his retirement, he was reappointed temporarily as Deputy Representative for Honduras in March 2010 and served for just a little over four months.

Jorge joined UNICEF as a national officer in Quito, Ecuador in January 1990. His first international posting was in April 1990 to Mexico as programme specialist covering children in difficult circumstances. In March 1997, he was posted to Kigali, Rwanda. Jorge served as the UNICEF Representative for Djibouti from April 2000 to May 2003. He later served in Florence from 2003-2004 and in Guatemala from 2004-2005 as a senior programme officer. In April 2005, Jorge was appointed as Deputy Representative in Guatemala and served in that position until his retirement on 31 January 2009. Prior to joining UNICEF, Jorge had been a professor of education and taught at the Universidad Central del Ecuador.

Staff around the world, including many former colleagues remember Jorge as a kind, thoughtful and generous person, devoted to the cause for children. Staff especially remember him for his commitment to development, peace and service.

Colleagues and friends who wish to express their personal condolences to the family may send these to his wife, Cumanda Acosta at cumandaacosta100@yahoo.com.

Please join me in wishing Jorge’s family comfort and strength during this very difficult time.

Kind regards,

Schola

Very moving. I'm so sorry I missed it. I fully agree about the need to revive the History Project, building on the good work of Sheila Barry, Howard Dale, Adhiratha Keefe, Marjorie Newman-Williams, Mary Cahill and others.

I would nominate Kul Gautam to write the letter, if he's available, and I'd be happy to polish it a bit if needed.

Warmest congrats Boudewijn and happy birthday Mary!

Dear Angela, Friends:

Angela makes an absolutely essential point about archiving away at National archives. One effective way would be to get the 5th Committee at UNHQ to pass a resolution in that regard and institutionalize the concept. Again, something Nicolas Prom is most strategically placed to advise/guide on.

It can easily be done!! Dear All,

One option for publishing News & Views is to send it out in a magazine format in which you can turn the pages as you would in a magazine or book. Some people like this sort of format. Others like the current 'document' format.

If you would like to try the alternative format, check the copy on our blog or just click here. Note that you need to give a moment for the file to load. Then open the file by clicking on the image of the cover and then click again on the small box in the center ("full screen"). At the top of the page you will then see a magnifying glass. Clicking there will zoom the text into an easier to read size. You can then flip through the pages as you would a book.

The software we are using for this format has some limitations, including the requirement to click a few times to reach a readable size of text.

Let us know please what you think of the alternate format. Thanks.

Thx for your positive feedback on our XUNICEF March edition. It is our collective efforts that produced an excellent publication under Tom’s leadership. Fouad has also been
a fantastic champion and he has been instrumental in highlighting UNICEF in Turkey 40 Years.
We are hoping to eventually ( sooner than later) be able to access on line these important country and five milestones.
With warm wishes
Doreen

Dear Colleagues / Editors of the ‘Newsletter’:

May I first of all, congratulate you heartily for a tremendous and excellent job with this edition (and all) of

‘XUNICEF News and reviews Newsletter’. It certainly shows your collective institutional trackrecord and more than

proved profesional capabilities over your many years of service to the UN and UNICEF. The wealth and complexity of this issue, preclude me to single out the editorial and technical work behind each of the components of the issue presented. Congratulations !!

In particular, I should like to thank you for the thorough presentation of my ‘UNICF trilogy’ : ‘Amber’, ‘Refugee from Irak’, and ‘Obra Salubre’ (translated as ‘Health endeavour’), a total close to a 1000+ pages, written over a period

of some 15 years (last book, in 2017, Other, non-related books also written over the period).

I couldn’t have personally assembled the wealth of information, narrative, pictorial, you have gathered. Thank you.

There is one point which may deserve an erratum: the UNICEF Executive Director at the time of the Ibero-american Summit on Children in 2001 was NOT Jim Grant (couldn’t possibly be), but his succesor, Mme. Carol Bellamy.

With my deep thanks and warm regards.

Dear Mariam,

We were all shocked by news of the attack on a village in central Mali, which resulted in so many innocent deaths, particularly among children. It was good to see the statement of Henrietta Fore on behalf of UNICEF. On behalf of your colleagues in XUNICEF could you please express our sympathies to any of those you may know in the region, and to the UNICEF team and the XUNICEF community in Mali.

Warm regards,

Tom

"Every war is a war against Children" was what Eglantyne Jebb, SCF's founder said a century ago in 1919. Following the end of World War I Jebb stood in London’s Trafalgar Square campaigning against the British blockade of Germany and Austria. She distributed a leaflet showing the emaciated children and declaring: “Our blockade has caused this, – millions of children are starving to death.” She was arrested, tried, convicted, and fined. But the judge in the case was moved by her commitment to children and paid her fine. His generosity was Save the Children’s first donation.
