In Kenya Whatsapp users are receiving offers of "UNICEF - Government subsidies"
In Uganda users are receiving messages titled "UNICEF Students Laptops Donation 2023.
In both cases internet monitors say the messages are only two of many 'phishing' scams designed to collect personal details of unwary Whatsapp users.
These are just two of many scams circulating on Whatsapp channels in East Africa. Those who receive the messages are asked to fill a form with their contact details. They then receive messages of congratulations on 'qualifying'
In a subsequent stage, those who have 'qualified' are often asked to contact at least five more people to sign up.
UNICEF offices in Uganda and Kenya have confirmed that both advertisements are scams. Clicking on the links does not lead back to the websites of either office or to UNICEF's official page.
In at least one case PesaCheck traced the imposter webpage back to a company called "Buzzwinners" which is registered in multiple countries around the world, including the US state of Arizona.
Somewhere, someone is building a massive database of contact details, likely for sale to third parties for marketing. Unfortunately they are using UNICEF's name in the process.
