Thanks, Carol Bellamy for your remarks at AUB and your concluding quotation: “Destroying any nation does not require the use of atomic bombs or the use of long-range missiles … it only requires lowering the quality of education and allowing cheating in examinations by the students.” So well said.
I love it! It’s funny but sadly there is a lot truth to it! 😂

Nice poem evokes a positive spirit on a dark subject. Harkens to Lennon's Imagine. HH
Interesting food for thought, although it, seems to promote nationalism

Nicely said!
My dear Rima,

I am so very sad to learn about the passing of your dear sister Doris.

Binata and I recall our multiple meetings with her - and her graceful hospitality at your apartment, at the UN & UNICEF. She was such a lovely sister — not just to you but to me and so many of our UN/UNICEF colleagues as well. I can imagine how hard it must be for you to cope with life without Doris. I can also imagine how hard it must have been for Doris and you in recent months to witness the horrific tragedy that is befalling the Palestinian people. Please accept my heartfelt sympathies. May Doris' noble heart rest in eternal peace, and may you have the strength to cope with her loss.

Cordially, Kul G

Dear Rima Saddened to hear about your sister, may her soul rest in eternal peace.
I was working in Ethiopia for Save the children when the song came out and the money came in that was shared between many of the NGOs. I can say that even with the monies that went to various government and TPLF coffers, it did a lot to create projects that served many communities at that time. What was of concern to many in the country was the patronizing song “ do they know its Christmas?” Being sung about a country that had converted to christianity before UK or Ireland. Many Ethiopians and others felt this was typical of the kind of ignorance about Africa that existed amongst so many westerners. Unfortunately the behaviour of Bob Geldof, his language and even the casual way he dressed was also viewed by many as disrespectful and insulting. Even if during the Derg regime officials had to wear a Korean style uniform they still retained their dignity. These were highly educated people, many with degrees from well known universities in UK, Europe and the US who were trying to do the best for their country. Being lectured at by an arrogant dishevelled young man in faded jeans and dirty sneakers using foul language, was extremely annoying but they tolerated him with more grace than he deserved. Those of us NGO representatives squirmed in our seats with embarrassment and yes shame at his behaviour. All these years later it seems agencies are still on a learning curve on how to communicate about humanitarian issues, the communities they serve etc. I am sorry the song was re- released as it does nothing to advance any knowledge of Africa and Ethiopia in particular. Just perpetuates same old stereotypes. This is not anonymous it is Angela Raven-Roberts
Courage chère Rima. Je n’ai pas eu le plaisir de connaître ta sœur mais je me rappelle de nos conversations et ta fierté sur tout ce qu’elle faisait. RIP.

Dear Rima, Isa and I were so very sorry to hear about Doris’s passing. We remember with great affection the times we were able to spend together. You must miss Doris terribly - she was a great person. With much love from us both. Peter and Isa
Have'nt read the whole document yet . First impressions: All UNICEF documents say the world is "changing" as if it was something new. Ever since it started the world has always been changing, so why use this? I's'nt UNICEF standing on a limb by projecting world trends into 2050? The SWOCR is usually to describe the present situation of children and what UNICEF is doing about it. There is something of an anomalyhere.
Inspired by debates on humanitarian/development policies above
And intrigued by the mystery of the lost glove
The rhymer looks at pronunciation of words ending in O V E.
Easily coming to mind is the word dove,
Followed by the most used one of love,
And why not another like shove?
But here comes a change in alcove,
Where the trees are is a grove,
It could be nearby a cove,
A place to which we drove,
To admire flowers and clove,
Only to find a trove
Of mittens on trees they hove,
Some were knit and others wove,
To warm hands not over a stove,
I tell the truth, by Jove !
But here comes more to prove,
That the language cannot remove
Pronunciations that move
You right out of the groove.
Bonjour Georges
Cordialement
Soliou B
