Tom - you have given a heartrending review of events you had to confront during your UNICEF days. Ethnic identity, which should be seen as enricdhing countries, has been forced into a mold of intolerance and actual attack. Yet we know that if somehow the affected communities find ways of reducing the conflict and developing a modus, people rise to the occasion. We hope that CO-PEACE can make a small dent in future looming disasters. People basically care for and about one another if the context for it is created or sustained.

Ramesh, shabash for your hard hitting outspoken column. As you say, MSM decided the content and range of information that one can access- I find that very very little mention of the prevailing dangerous perils of substance abuse, addiction and inequities which also gives the mainstream the feeling of all is well. Youth who are most vulnerable are not aware of these dangers.

Tom, your article is so informative and provides a historical perspective to the ongoing conflict which , as you say, has parallels elsewhere. You have drawn on your experiences to make this interesting and human rather than a dry newspaper column. Thank you for writing and sharing your views.

I agree with Tom. I don't know anyone or any policy that glamourizes single parenthood, and certainly not the single mothers or fathers themselves. Good parenthood is what matters for children, and it helps when there are more people around to share the joy and the burden. If mother and fathers are caring and love each other, it is best for the child. Situations where parents go on each others nerves, constantly fight or are busy ignoring each other, are definitely worse for the child than just material hardship. To equate good parenting with 'father and mother must be around no matter what' is reinforcing dated stereotypes about the role of father and mother - and men and women -, something that we have been fighting for long enough. It is important that those who care for children live the values that we cherish, not that they conform to the traditional gender and role models.

The book is an indication of the difficulty of describing AI. Kissinger's quote is worth the entire book - in a nutshell.
As you suspected, Tom, the Robot Review cannot be seen due to the NYT firewall. Can you just post it? Thanks.

Thanks Tom. As with many things its more about contribution than attribution. Baquer and family have earned some private time to once again become a normal family and face the future together. Sending love.

Thank you Tony, for sharing this fascinating report. It seems that you had to go beyond the call of duty in establishing good working relationships. And even if the UNICEF Manual didn't say "Avoid water, drink beer", I always thought it should be the rule. And a little rice wine doesn't hurt, either. You sure had some very adventurous assignments and meeting very colorful people.

Tom, your persistence, and that of many other leaders in this effort, helped us to advocate for Baquer and family over these eight years. Thanks to everyone involved and a big hug to Baquer, Effie, and family.

30 years ago, the biggest supermarket in Malawi was selling frozen chicken drumsticks from the USA, at cut throat prices, undermining the local chicken industry. I can only speculate that these cheap prices were made possible also by Mexican children working in US slaughterhouses. More damage is done, in Mexico, the US and Malawi by unethical business and practices, than any combined UN aid can make good. The UN should wake up and start putting their fingers unto such unscrupulous dependencies that continue to separate the ‘developed’ from the ‘developing’.

What a long journey for the Namazis and what a tremendous effort by XUNICEF. Thank you for compiling this detailed and visuallly interesting timeline, Tom. A Zoom call would indeed be wonderful. I feel a bit of calm in my heart that does not happen too frequently these days.

Thanks Nuzhat. Certainly hope this indicates some movement. However, with so many states rolling back their child labour laws, the flow may be in the wrong direction.

I watched on CNN Siamak's arrival in Doha with a great deal of emotion - that his terrible and undeserved ordeal was finally over. I couldn't be happier for him, for Baquer,, and for all of the family.
