From Your Editors
The situation in Afghanistan continues to dominate the news, almost every hour of the day. We do receive a lot of links to news articles our readers found on the internet, and we do publish most of those sent to us. It is difficult to track the events, and we have too many articles to recommend a particular story. You can click here to get all articles relevant to Afghanistan, in one place. Or simply check our blog xunicefnewsandviews.blogspot.com every day to see what is new.
As if we had not had enough bad news, the bubonic plague seems to be back, in DRC. All this on top of the pandemic, and the different local emergencies around the world. Keep on checking our blog every now and then to see what is important to the XUNICEF community.
You may also subscribe to receive by email a daily digest of new articles posted on our website.
Our bibliography of UNICEF Authors has been quietly growing. Keep on checking - the bibliography can also be found in the right sidebar of our website. If you do not see the sidebar, click on the three horizontal lines (called the 'hamburger' by the geeks) in the top right corner, and it will open.

Last Call for Contributions
The editors of XUNICEF News and Views are busy collecting and editing stories from our readers for the ongoing commemoration of UNICEF@75 - our September Quarterly Newsletter. The deadline for stories has been set for this week. In case you didn't know - we are looking for memoirs, thoughts, musings, anecdotes or other stories that reflect the work of UNICEF and its staff over the last 25 years.
This will complement our series of newsletters, where our March Quarterly covered the first 25 years (1946-1972), and our June Quarterly the second 25 years (1972-1996). There still is time to contribute to the kaleidoscope of events, stories, efforts, trials and errors and achievments that made UNICEF to what it is ´today. Feel free to contact the editors at xunicef.news.views@gmail.com in case of any question, or if you would like to discuss a possible contribution.
Also note, that Sarah Winfield from the UNICEF Division of Communication has asked XUNICEF members to help finding stories built around people in countries where UNICEF has worked, who are 'giving back to their community' in important ways - leaders, health professionals, human rights activists, educators. Her email is swinfield@unicef.org.
UNICEF@75
Tom McDermott had planned to wrap up his series about the role of UNICEF in the Biafran War. Because of the turn of events, Tom takes a look at the early days of UNICEF in Afghanistan. Documentation of those days has been scarce, but read A Little History and A Short Detour from Biafra to Afganistan to learn about the situation and the challenges more than 60 years ago. We are sure, this piece will trigger many more memories, and perhaps also encourage other readers to send in their contributions about their work and life in Afghanistan.
