One of my colleagues benefitted from UNICEF as a child/refugee from Afghanistan. Now he works for UNICEF. Perhaps not 75 years ago, but poignant nonetheless.

I appreciate all of your historical research and photos in this post about Afghanistan, Tom. It is an important strategic region that has unfortunately erupted into a chaotic situation as we end to our US involvement. ( CSWAC book club member, Marilyn F.)

Luis, Amidst the gloom and doom that surrounds us, thanks for giving us some respite with these beautiful pictures and commentary.

Many thanks for the correction, Gulbadan. Also nice to know that you were - and likely still are - a Girl Scout.

If only we humans can learn from our own past mistakes or from the mistakes others make and we do not repeat them. I doubt it though!

Hi Tom, just a small correction: Shah Mahmood Khan was King Zahir Shah's uncle. King Zahir Shah was the son of King Nader Shah. King Nader Shah had two brothers, Shah Mahmood Khan and Shah Wali Khan.

This was news for me, not seen it earlier, guess I am not so much in when we talk about innovation area, but glad to hear that it is happening here. All well here, COVID-19 is still here, but with close to 50% population with two shots, not bad. Pirkko Lähetetty iPadista

Thanks for interesting background on Afghanistan. There are reversal of lifestyle largely after external aggression as we have seen in Iran, Iraq, and in Afghanistan as presented above. As Michael Moore says hopefully Afghanistan is the last one!

As we conclude this series I want to raise an issue with my readers. Why is it that the US Postal Services have never issued a stamp to commemorate our early UNICEF Executive Directors, Maurice Pate, Henry Labouisse and Jim Grant.? They do issue stamps for other "famous Americans", and yet these three have probably contributed more for the world, and for the US than any of the others. So, I suggest that our US colleagues (both citizens and residents) start a campaign to get a stamp or stamps issued, especially this year which is the 75th anniversary. What better recognition for these remarkable gentlemen who are probably better known around the world than in the US. So, please write to your congress person, to the US Postmaster General, to any others who may have a say in this. We should also get the US Fund for UNICEF involved as they can make some pressures. Otherwise, what about the UNICEF DOC taking on such a task ? I am sure many of you will support this worthwhile issue.

Very interesting stories about Marlene Dietrich and Audrey Hepburn's stamp. Amazing how much such stamps are worth.

This is amazing. Many thanks Fouad for discovering and sharing it.

Thanks, Doreen. The humanitarian Aid workers who worked in Afghanistan (international and national) had very strong commitment otherwise it would have been impossible to live and function in that active war zone. But I question whether the way the UN and our allies operated in Afghanistan was the right way... one day we, as UNICEF, may want to do an "autopsy" of our engagement there- to learn what were the right approaches and what went wrong. Perhaps!

Thanks for sharing your interesting experience Alan. One wonders if the Afghans will ever unite to govern their country at least in a federal model and hopefully secular! Rohini de silva

I am amazed at the fact that there is recognition of the suffering and loss of life of children in armed conflicts. I worked for 10 consecutive years in one posting ( I may have broken a record) in one of the most violent civil wars. The UNICEF office at that time was for all of Central America. Three of the countries ( Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua) were in a conflict of extreme cruelty. We proposed and succeeded in mediating a truce in the war of El Salvador so children could be vaccinated. For six consecutive years, twice a year, two days at a time, the guns were silent to let children be vaccinated. JAmes Grant said " For the first time in the history of humanity, war stopped for the sake of children". One of the most socially conscious social communicators of Latin America, Ricardo Lobo, and myself have proposed a documentary at a low cost, so young people ( not so young ones too) could learn from our successes and failures of how to work for humanitaian assistance in armed conflict. So far, we have not received a penny. This is how we repeat our errors. We refuse to learn and teach younger generations. I hope the new the new Special representative at least reads our proposal. I will try and send her one. Maybe she is more accessible....
