UNICEF at 75 - our Next 25 Years About our Cover Children have traveled a long way since 1946.  We in UNICEF were privileged to walk some of that distance with them and occasionally to smoothen their path.  They still have a long path to travel ahead, but they walk with confidence. Let us share their journey with hope and confidence for these coming 25 years. 

  Many of our readers will recall that we used to publish the Quarterly in a magazine format that allowed you to flip the pages.  We stopped because of concerns that our articles could then be found on the open web.  We now have discovered another service that allows the materials we post to remain 'unlisted' for search engines. Note that it may prove difficult to read this version on a smartphone or on some tablets.  It works best on a laptop or computer screen.   UNICEF at 75 - our Third 25 Years Cover Page About our Cover The cover of this edition is taken from a set of greeting cards produced by UNICEF Germany, which are meant to send a message of social cohesion and cultural diversity, promoting a fair, tolerant and open-minded world. Even in the digital age, greeting cards continue as a main medium to spread joy, sympathy and hope.

We are asking ourselves (and you) what theme would be appropriate for the cover of our September 2021 Quarterly, which will cover the period 1977 to 2021. Once we have a theme, we will need the help of our artists and photographers in designing another great cover. To help jog your memories of our past covers, we put together this set of the past 10 Quarterly covers. Help us come up with a theme. Artists / Photographers - help us with another great design.   3 Ways to Read the Quarterly 1. Read the Web Version - this is a new approach for us - all articles are available on our website. It works very much like articles on our regular blog. The web version is good for viewing on a smartphone or tablet of any size, in addition to the normal viewing on a computer/laptop screen. Let us know how you like it, as we may adopt it as our only way for future editions of the Quarterly.

This edition is the first of four such editions we plan for 2021 in celebration of UNICEF’s 75th Anniversary. Each will cover a 25 year period of our history, with the final edition (December 2021) presenting the thoughts of our members on the years ahead for UNICEF. Click here  The March 2021 edition looks at ‘our first 25’ - the years from December 1946 to December 1971. During this important period a small group of advocates pulled together the money, people, and legal structure needed to address the needs of children, assert their rights, and help governments develop the services and institutions critical for their welfare. Plans for the March 2021 Quarterly are finally coming together.  Thanks to the many suggestions we received from our readers and our editors, we are able to lay out more concrete plans.  Our inbox for suggestions and comments, however, is still open and we welcome your thoughts. Our March edition will include three sections.      WE NEED YOUR HELP in all three areas: * moments in the history of those first 25 years - events, photos, videos * beneficiaries - what we know of the beneficiaries of UNICEF assistance;  some like Audrey Hepburn returned to help others, some went on to leadership roles, but what about others who stayed in touch.  Did you stay in touch with any of those beneficiaries of our programmes who you met during the years you worked for UNICEF? * UNICEF's people and characters we knew - the weird and wonderful characters who made UNICEF work in those early years. 1950's Childhood Memories ©RTE The September 2020 News and Views Quarterly will feature childhood memories, nostalgia, funny incidents, and so forth. Enough with doom and gloom !!  We need a lift from more serious topics.  Join us in celebrating childhood - and our memories of those happy days. Please send us your stories, memoirs, and photos.  Keep them light, happy, funny - if possible. We want this edition to be as visual as possible, so please contribute photos - of you, your family as you grew up, your neighborhood, or anything that fits your memories of those days.   Padmini -My Grandchildren and their Worldview  When Divya, my grand-daughter was about three or four, she set up a ‘pretend’ stall selling hot-cross buns and I had to buy something from her.   ‘How much for one?’, I asked. ‘Ten dollars!’ ‘That’s too much!’ I protested ‘I’ll give you five’. She shook her head and retorted,’That is too little. You can have it for three. Needless to say, I gave her the virtual 3 dollars gladly, and ate the bun virtually.  Both selller and buyer were so satisfied at the ‘bargain’! My grandson, Jai, was nearly twelve earlier this year. He likes going to school early so he can play with his friend, Andre. One morning, they were playing basketball, with Andre’s jacket as the ball. Aiming at the basket, Jai found it entangled in the hoop! So to retrieve it, he aimed at it with his shoe, and that landed on a ledge above! Now there was no go but to seek adult help, and he had to write an apology, etc. The note came home to his parents, ...
