Just as the annual polio campaign was about to begin in September, the Taliban have informed the UN that the campaign is suspended. No reasons were given, but there are indications that the objections have to do with the door-to-door process. This leaves open some possibility that an agreement may be reached on using central points such as mosques to continue vaccinations.
So far this year WHO reports 18 cases of polio in Afghanistan, compared with 6 last year.
