World Press Photo Story of the Year - The Price of Peace in Afghanistan : Mads Nissen

Winner of the World Press Photo Story of the Year - The Price of Peace in Afghanistan by Danish Photographer Mads Nissen. In a series of photos from 2022, Nissen shows haunting images of daily life in Afghanistan. Nissen said that he takes images to push for change, and that change is desperately needed in Afghanistan.
Herat: Khalil Ahmad shows a traumatic scar left after his parents decided to sell his kidney in order to afford food for the family of 11 children. The price of $3,500 was more than Khalil's father could have earned in years of work. Since the operation, Khalil suffers chronic pain and no longer has the strength for soccer and cricket. The lack of work has driven many families to enter the illegal trade in organs.

Women and children beg for bread outside a bakery in central Kabul. Soaring prices have forced more and more people to rely entirely on the compassion of others.

Outskirts of Herat - A family burns plastic to make a fire for cooking. Thousands of people are moving into informal camps as a result of drought and the food crisis.

Alibeg: Lunch at home with Nafisa and her family. About her son, Hojatullah, she says, "The nurses thought he was too quiet, he did not try to crawl, and when he was measured and weighed, they told me that he was severely malnourished. I breastfed him, but I do not get enough to eat myself, so the milk is not worth much. Most people in this village survive on a daily diet of white bread and tea.

Kabul : Pacha and his daughter, Bebe Aisa, clean and polish shoes to make money for food. Shoe cleaning costs 5 Afghani (approximately 5 US cents); a loaf of bread costs 10 Afghani, but fewer and fewer people can afford Pacha's services.
