Our Feature of the Week

This space could have been yours.  We ran out of features. We count on you, our members, to send us your stories of where you live, where you have traveled, of your passions for art, music or photography.  Don't let us run empty - share!!!

Our Columnists This Week

Nuzhat Shahzadi - Off the Radar

Ramesh Shrestha - Do We Really Need COP 28?

Iran - UNICEF finally issued a new statement of concern this week on the deaths, injuries and arrests of children in Iran.  This was not UNICEF's first statement on the situation, but this statement went further than previous statements in calling for an end to raids and searches in schools.  Given the past several weeks of street demonstrations and social media barbs over what critics perceived as UNICEF's silence, many, including us, saw the statement as overdue.

In his comment, Kul Gautam spoke for many of us in saying, "Better late than never." He went on to note that the statement could have been strengthened by referring to the resolution the previous day by the UN Human Rights Council and Volker Türk's "strong and principled remarks".  We fully agree.

We were particularly pleased to read Gianni Murzi's excellent comment on an article in the Lancet which sets out deep concerns over Iran's decision to send children detained in demonstrations to a 'correctional and rehabilitation' centre.  As Gianni points out, this amounts to a blatant attempt to brainwash children, as well as intimidation of children and their families. This must stop.  UNICEF and others need to speak out forcefully on this specific issue.

Sexual violence - Angelina Jolie called for an end to sexual violence in conflict.  She points out that in this as in other campaigns, "governments and international efforts come and go.  Those who remain and who fight and struggle for decades are local people."  On a closely related topic, UNICEF issued a photo story this week on the global tragedy of human trafficking.  We believe that on this topic as well, at government level we are likely to see more words than action.  Any real action is more likely  to come at the local level - something we hope UNICEF offices will support consistently.

Staffan de Mistura - Don't miss the excellent interview with our colleague.  The interview is a wonderful recounting of Staffan's life of international service.

No feature this week - As we mentioned above, our well of stories ran dry this week.  Like all of our articles, our features depend on what you, our members, choose to share.  Go through your attic of memories, dig out the photographs of trips you have made.  Tell us the stories of the places you live.  Share the art, photography, and music that you enjoy, or even better, that you have produced.

XUNICEF now has 995 members, representing 108 nationalities, and living in 100 countries. Help us to keep growing by inviting other members of the wider UNICEF family - current and retired staff, consultants, spouses, volunteers and contractors. All we ask is that the person has a significant current or past relationship to UNICEF and a continuing commitment to UNICEF's mission.

Want to find out who else is already a member?

Need someone's email address?
Contact the Network Administrator, Oscar Fernandez (ofernandez@xunicef.com) or contact the editors at News and Views (xunicef.news.views@gmail.com).

Why don't we post the email addresses of all members?
Some members do not want their addresses to become public. Also, we have had experiences in the past when someone copied the list and used it for advertising. This could become even worse if someone outside XUNICEF used the list and the list became available to hackers and spammers. For that we reason, we ask that you contact us for someone's address.

The XUNICEF network is the platform where former and active colleagues come together and share their news and opinions with each other. Members may agree - or disagree - on many issues, but the only way to find out is if you share with us what matters to you.

Here is the link to our membership form. If your contacts have changed, use the same form to update our lists.
