SOLILOQUY OF A POSTAGE STAMP, # 80 UNITED NATIONS EDIFICES, Continued, by Fouad Kronfol

Having concluded the segment devoted to the new WHO HQ building in Geneva I now revert to featuring other UN edifices  from around the world. It is no surprise that most countries which issue stamps related to the United Nations invariably show the UN complex in New York with the Secretariat building, the General Assembly and the Library. The differences, however, are mostly in what other features such stamps depict. There are also a few stamps and covers that have other structures which I will show.

Photo 4371: This is a First Day Cover issued by the UN Postal Administration with a definitive stamp showing the UN Emblem and the name of the Organization in the five official languages. The cachet shows the UN Complex in New York City together with the Emblem. The post mark on the stamp shows five hands intertwined within a wreath representing "Collective Measures for Peace". Another post mark shows the envelope was issued on 4 September 1962 from New York.

Photo 4373: This is a Souvenir Card issue by the UNPA  commemorating the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). This new UN Agency was founded in 1970 and became the 14th Specialized Agency within the UN. The bottom of the card shows stamps issued for some of the other Specialized Agencies, The three stamps on the top show the HQ Building of WIPO in Geneva, Switzerland. The stamp was designed by Eliezer Weishoff from Israel. Another stamp of 13 cents is also affixed to the Card but I am not sure why. The Souvenir Card is signed by Secretary General Kurt Waldheim.

Photo 4374: These two stamps were issued by the UNPA to commemorate the International Labour Office (ILO) in 1974. The design shows the ILO HQ building in Geneva, Switzerland and was designed by Henry Bencsath from the USA. Founded in October 1919 under the League of Nations it is the first and oldest UN Agency with a mandate" to advance social and economic justice by setting international labour standards".One area of collaboration with UNICEF has been that of child labour.
Photo 4375:One of the earlier stamps issued by the UNPA was this definitive stamp showing the entire UN Complex in New York. The designer was Olaf Mathiesen from Denmark.

Photo 4376: This UNPA stamp was issued in 1969 and shows the Palais des Nations building in Geneva, Switzerland, which is the European HQ of the UN.This stamp was issued in Switzerland and was designed by Ole Hamann, form Denmark.

Photo 4377: Also issued in Swtzerland in 1985 this stamp features the ILO Training Centre in Turin, Italy where many types of international training activities are carried out.

Photo 4378: Here we have a First Day Cover issued by the UNPA on which are three stamps from the Republic of Togo. The cachet shows the UN Secretariat and the General Assembly buildings in New York with the UN Emblem and the commemoration of the UN's 15th Anniversary in 1960.The post mark on the stamps shows it was cancelled from Lome, Togo.
Photo 4380: Another First Day Cover comes from the Republic of Gabon in central Africa. The stamp was issued to commemorate the country's 10th Anniversary of membership in the UN. The design shows the UN Secretariat Building behind an arrow-like shape with the UN Emblem and wreath. The cachet reproduces the same design as the stamp. Two post marks also reproduce the stamp design and were issued from Libreville, Gabon on 30 September 1971.

Photo 4381:This is an attractive four stamp set issued by Afghanistan in 1961 to commemorate the UN's Fifteenth Anniversary. The design on the stamps shows the UN Complex in New York and the UN Emblem.

Photo 4382:From Colombia we have this stamp also issued to commemorate the UN's Fifteenth Anniversary in 1960. The design shows the Secretariat building with some of the New York skyline in the background.
Photo 4383: This is a First Day Cover with three stamps issued by the Kingdom of Burundi in 1962 to commemorate the country's first year anniversary of membership in the United Nations. The stamps have the numerals 1962 within which are the UN Emblem and the National Emblem of Burundi. The cachet shows the UN complex in Manhattan together with some of the NY skyline.
Photo 4384:This is an interesting envelope. The two stamps were issued by Switzerland (Helvetia) as part of a special category of stamps related solely to the UN and its Agencies. The post mark shows the Palais des Nations building in Geneva. The cover is addressed as "Personal" to a Mr. John Selfe in Geneva. The cover's marking shows that it emanates from the IAEA Delegation to ECOSOC within the United Nations Office in Geneva. There is a rectangular marking with the numeral" conf.10" which I am not sure what it represents.
Photo 4385: I  now change venue and show this stamp issued by the UNPA in 1979 which features the new UN HQ Complex called the Donaupark in Vienna, Austria, in which a number of UN Agencies were housed including IAEA and UNRWA.The stamp was designed by Jozsef Vertel from Hungary. I had the opportunity of working in the impressive building when I made two successive consultancy missions with IAEA on different personnel related matters.
Photo 4386: Here is another stamp issued by the UNPA with the design showing the UN Complex in Donaupark in Vienna, Austria. This stamp was designed by Henryh Chylinski from Poland.

Photo 4387: This again is a stamp issued by the UNPA in Austria representing another version of the Donaupark UN Complex in Vienna. It is a newer design issued in 1987. To note that the edifices are surrounded by the name of the Organization but here there are SIX official languages since the addition of Arabic in 1973.
