First Encounters of the Week - Suzanne Trainer Soler-Sala

1971 - Our Family’s First Year in New Delhi

In early May we posted the sad news that Victor Soler-Sala’s dear wife, Suzanne, had passed away. In her memory Victor kindly shared with us a letter Suzanne sent to friends and family at the end of their first year in India. This is the first of a new series we are calling ‘First Encounters’. Click here.

From Your Editors

Three New Series:

Travelers of the Week - Last week Detlef and Gabi Palm provided the first in our new series of travel stories - Travelers of the Week - with a photolog of their fabulous travel across Europe and Turkey to Armenia.

First Encounters of the Week - This week Suzanne and Victor Soler-Sala provide the starting point for the second of our new series - ‘First Encounters’.

We hope you will help us with this news series by sharing the stories of your own first encounters in a new country. What were your first impressions of the place, the people, the food?   As with Suzanne Soler-Sala’s article, we want to capture the memories of our spouses and children - not just of us staff members. Likely, our spouses and our children had more interesting experiences in the new country than did we, who were stuck in offices and meetings.  Let us hear their stories - and yours.

Neighborhood of the Week - Will be our third new series.  We hope our members will tell us about the city, town, or village where they live.  We are looking for a set of 12 photos (not more, not less) plus some explanatory text that give us a glimpse of life around you - your location and neighbors.  For a great example, see Gianni Murzi’s lovely look at his neighbors in Barbarano Romano, the village outside Rome where he and his family took refuge during the worst of the pandemic.  Click here and be sure to open the slideshow at the bottom of the page.

Congrats - We congratulate our partners at the End Violence Against Children Coalition who are celebrating their fifth anniversary this month.

Articles this Week - Our articles this week include a worrying story on child deaths from COVID in Indonesia, concerns about the ‘back to school’ push, a PassBlue article on the challenges ahead for the next ED, and preparations (and doubts) about the coming UN Summit on Food Systems.  Also some good news about Bhutan’s remarkable vaccination rate and the latest senior staff appointments.  Please browse all our stories. (Note that we are purposely phasing out the use of links to lead readers from the Digest to the articles - this is in the hope that you will browse all the articles, rather than just those we linked).

Lighter Stuff

From famine to feast -- two weeks ago we were complaining that we had no humor articles or cartoons. Suddenly, it seems we have too many.  Better this than that.  Here are this week’s offerings to keep us laughing.

The Puns of 2021

UNICEF@75

‘A Little History’ is back.  This week Tom tells us about ‘A Young Swede Who Visits Barcelona’ Click here.

UNICEF’s Internal Comms - The editors met again this week with UNICEF’s Internal Communications and UNICEF 75 teams.  They are firming up plans to mark UNICEF 75 with twice-weekly articles and podcasts from September through December.  The articles the two UNICEF teams plan for September will cover UNICEF’s first 25 years (i.e. what we covered in the March Quarterly).  October will cover the second 25 and November will cover the latest 25.

Our September Quarterly - Deadline 1 September - On the XUNICEF side this is a good chance to remind all our members that the XUNICEF September Quarterly will cover UNICEF’s recent years - 1997 to 2021.  We need your contributions.  Keep in mind that your articles should be between 800 to 1,000 words (no more) and include photos (one of you and at least one relevant to the topic of the article).  The deadline is 1 September.  Help make this another great XUNICEF Quarterly.

  1. Gianni, your pictures are wonderful. The best, as usual, is the one witht he amazed look of the little child. That could win a prize.
You, with your pictures, succeeded in transporting me to the Italy I never met.
