The Soliloquy of a Postage Stamp #14: Fouad Kronfol

The SILVER ANNIVERSARY, contd.

Our readers will be pleased to learn that this is the final group of philatelic materials issued by countries to commemorate UNICEF's 25th Anniversary.I am completing this milestone's commemoration in order to give time and space for other important milestones like the International Year of the Child,( IYC), the 40th anniversary as well as CSDR issues.

The West African country of Togo issued this interesting set of 7 stamps in order to commemorate the United Nations on its 25th anniversary as well as some of the other UN Specialized Agencies.. Each stamp shows a different organization, starting with ILO, FAO, UNESCO, the UN, UNICEF (see arrow), UPU, and WHO.

The Pacific Ocean island of Tonga issued some very original sets of stamps for UNICEF's anniversary.I decided to show all three sets because they are quite colorful and different from other nations' stamps. This first set has the same design on all five stamps..showing a boy sitting cross-legged on the floor and juggling with six balls, each representing one letter of UNICEF.He is wearing a blue shirt with the UNICEF logo on it. The dates 1946-1971 are inscribed on the stamps. Tonga calls itself "The Friendly Islands" which is spelled under the name of the country. These three sets were given to me by Steve Umemoto, some years back in London when he and I were exchanging stamps from both our collections.

Another five stamp set from Tonga shows, again, the same design of a girl standing next to a pile of four boxes Each box is labelled differently: the top one has UNICEF logo and the years 1946-1971;the next one is the country name, the next is its "The Friendly Islands" appelation and the bottom one shows it is an airmail stamp with its postal value .

The third set of three stamps from Tonga is a colorful lineup of letters spelling UNICEF.with the logo on the letter "N" in each case. As in the other sets the stamps have the country name, the designation of "Friendly Islands , and the dates 1946-1971 on each. This set is an airmail set also but is for "official" use.

Thailand, which hosts the EAPRO regional office in Bangkok, issued this stamp showing the UNICEF emblem next to a mother holding up her child.with the inscrition of 25th anniversary and the dates 1946-1971.

Here is a stamp from the Republic of Tunisia with a stylized UN wreath of various colors on top of which is the UNICEF mother and child image. The inscription indicates the 25th anniversary of UNICEF and the dates 1946-1971 in both Arabic and French.

The Turkish Republic issued this two stamp set for the 25th anniversary of UNICEF. The design is a simple UNICEF logo with the dates 1946-1971 underneath. These are "semi-postal "stamps, with a surcharge on the value of postage, meant for child welfare activities..

The Arab Republic of Yemen came out with this two stamp set to commemorate UNICEF's 25th anniversary. The stamps show the UNICEF logo on one side , next to a picture of a young boy reading a verse from the Koran.

The Peoples Democratic Republic of Yemen, otherwise known as South Yemen, was proclaimed on 30 November 1967 when the Federation of South Arabia became independent and consisted of the Federation and the former British colony of Aden. The name was changed to PDRY on 30 November 1970 when the country's government turned socialist. This two stamp set issued to commemorate UNICEF's 25th anniversary shows a large group of children in various national clothing .Interesting to note are some of the children wearing military-like uniforms.

The Republic of Zaire, ex-Belgian Congo, issued this three stamp set for the UNICEF anniversary. The designs show a mother and child being attended by a health worker, the map of Africa with Zaire shown in dark color; and a boy next to some village houses in the background. All three stamps have the UNICEF logo and the years 1946-1971 on them.

The next two First Day Covers from Costa Rica and Guatemala, respectively, have the same cachet design on the left of the cover showing a photo of groups of children playing. Both covers have the inscription of 25th anniversary of UNICEF, and were issued as a "Tribute to the Children of .Central America and Panama". The Costa Rica cover is post marked 11 January 1971 issued from San Jose.

The Guatemala cover is post marked 2 November 1971 and was issued from Guatemala City.
