Testing a New Procedure for Announcing Deaths and Sending Condolences

We are testing a New Webpage for Announcements of Deaths and Condolences

We have opened an obituary page for announcements of deaths and messages of condolence.

Please click here to see the obituary page.  You can also find it in the menu at the top right of our website.  In the drop-down menu choose "Pages" and "Missing You".

Why a new process for announcing deaths and sending condolences?

Messages of sympathy and condolences on the XUNICEF network are seen by all of us, but are seldom seen by those who most want to see them -  members of the bereaved family.

The announcement that one of our colleagues has passed away often brings an enormous outpouring of condolences and expressions of sympathy for the family.  Sadly,  these condolences are seldom passed back to the bereaved family.  Moreover, members are deluged with copies of these messages.

Sending  your messages back to a single "Missing You'  webpage ensures that we will have a complete list of the messages of support from members to pass back to the family.

Recent cases where we applied this new procedure:

The recent death of Bjorn Ljundqvist was the first case in which one XUNICEF member took responsibility for collecting responses and passing them back to the family. Rozanne Chorlton collected all the messages from members and ensured that they reached Bjorn's family.

Many thanks Rozanne.

We followed a similar pattern with the death last week of Satish Khorana, for whom we opened a separate webpage where we collected all these messages.  Oscar Fernandez then passed the consolidated list of messages back to Satish's family.

A few points to keep in mind:

1.  If you learn of the death of a colleague, please first confirm the news and obtain the permission of the family, before you send out an announcement.  We had this year a case in which the family did not want the news announced.  Or much worse - what happens when the news is wrong - and the person is still living?   Always confirm before you announce.

2.  Please - never address a message addressed as "To: allmembers@xunicef.com."

3.  Instead, address your message as "Bcc: allmembers@xunicef.com".  This will mean that responses will return only to you, rather than being copied to the entire membership.

4.  Please add the address "bcc: missing-you-xunicef@googlegroups.com"   This will ensure that it is posted to the obituary page and passed back to the family of the deceased.

5. Send your announcement to this address "missing-you-xunicef@googlegroups.com" and let us send it out to the full membership (as a bcc: message).

6.  If due to urgency, you must send the message directly to the full membership, be sure to address it as a 'bcc: and include a copy to 'missing-you-xunicef@googlegroups.com'

Thanks - and please let us know your thoughts on this new procedure.
