One year ago, a group of staff members came together and decided they could no longer remain passive in the face of Israel’s crimes in Gaza. Few if any events in the history of the United Nations have been so repugnant to the spirit and letter of the Charter: a Member State waging a campaign of genocide, with total impunity, while much of the rest of the international community continues providing the weapons, financing and political cover that make this possible.
Click here for the full statementWe felt we needed to speak up, to register our opposition, to stand in solidarity with our colleagues on the frontline, and decry institutional silence and the normalization of genocide. Over the past year, some 2,500 colleagues have found in this initiative a space for solidarity, truth-telling and collective action.
“On this first anniversary, United Staff for Gaza salutes human rights defenders within and beyond the United Nations – Palestinians above all, but also people of every nationality – who remain determined to hold Governments and corporations to account,” says our Chair, Andrew Gilmour, the UN’s former Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights.
