It seems that Jeffrey Epstein’s influence extends well beyond the Final Frontier.

The news streams are so persistent that one cannot avoid them.  Today, we have been treated to photos of former President Clinton in a pool with Ghislaine Maxwell and stories of the former President seeking funding for the Clinton Global Initiative from Jeffrey Epstein.

In my records, I have a file entitled ‘PBS report on the Laura Bush-Case-Clinton donation.doc’ which includes a photo in which Bill Clinton is shown with First Lady Laura Bush and Steve and Jane Case celebrating the announcement of a major donation for PlayPumps.

As soon as I saw ‘Clinton Global Initiative’, it reminded me of a bruising encounter that UNICEF suffered at the hands of a friend of First Lady Laura Bush, who was supporting ‘PlayPumps’ to the tune of US$ 16.4 million using USAID HIV/AIDS funding and some from two NGOs.

The friend of First Lady Laura Bush became central to the promotion of ‘PlayPumps’, and she ‘invited’ UNICEF to invest in a large number of ‘PlayPumps’ which, perhaps wisely, they declined to do until a technical evaluation had taken place.  The ‘friend’ (Ms REDACTED) became insistent that such an evaluation was unnecessary.  After all, ‘PlayPumps’ were endorsed by the President of the USA, weren’t they ? 

UNICEF decided that an evaluation should, nevertheless, take place and as Ms REDACTED was not inclined to arrange it, they went ahead and performed an internal evaluation which was NOT released but which, curiously, found its way to her.  Her reaction was immediate and brutal.  Had I been part of the UNICEF team that had to deal with the situation, I would have asked the lady in question how she came to obtain a classified, internal UNICEF document ?  As it was, they said nothing, which meant that they were not going to invest in PlayPumps, anyway. 

UNICEF’s silence was well founded.  At that time, the USA was a major contributor to UNICEF, and it was reasoned that any spat with such a celebrity, would have no winners for children as donations to UNICEF would inevitably drop, no matter what was said by anyone.

For me, personally, this was a relief because while UNICEF had requested me to be an honest broker between REDACTED and UNICEF in South Africa where I was due to be for a consultancy, and where REDACTED was located at that time, I was released, happily for everyone.  It was decided at the last moment that I should NOT contact her but simply let sleeping dogs lie.  Probably just as well because I am absolutely certain that I would have fanned the flames, vigorously.  She deserved no less.

It makes me wonder how close UNICEF came to being named in one or more of the millions of documents presently being examined in the USA, related to Jeffrey Epstein.  Would UNICEF have been able to handle such fame ?

Returning to PlayPumps – which have now disappeared into the history books as an event not to be copied in future.  However, one person has moved on and is making waves in a different capacity.  Ms REDACTED has managed to be appointed as the lead of a Mid-Atlantic Investment Advisory firm based near Geneva where she can sample ‘filet de perche avec vin blanc de maison’ on the banks of Lac Leman while she considers how poor communities can be better served. . . . . .

So, if you are tempted to make contact with Ms REDACTED with a view to increasing an investment, take a long, long spoon with you.
