Carney's remarks reminded me of even bolder remarks by Pierre Elliott Trudeau (and Swedish PM Olof Palme) opposing the US War in Vietnam half a century ago. I hope all Canadians are proud of their PM, at least in this regard.
I was touched by PM Carney's reference to Czechoslovakia's President Vaclav Havel's touching remarks. I recall Havel's very touching remarks in another context at the 1990 World Summit for Children, which I quote extensively in my memoir, 'Global Citizen from Gulmi...(pages 146-148)
I was glad to hear Carney questioning DJT's proposal for the so-called "Board of Peace" as it is clearly a blatant effort to undermine and, in effect, replace the UN and its Charter and Security Council with DJT serving as its sole veto-wielding Chair. Hope other leaders who are invited to join, and donate $1 Billion for permanent membership, will see the Board as a dangerous vanity project of the "Dear Leader" for what it really is.

In this World Economic Forum address at Davos, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney discusses the "rupture" of the old international rules-based order and outlines Canada’s new strategy of "value-based realism." He calls on middle powers to stop pretending the old system still functions and instead build new, pragmatic coalitions to withstand pressure from great power rivalry.
The "Green Grocer" Analogy: Carney uses Vaclav Havel’s analogy of a green grocer who displays a sign he doesn't believe in just to avoid trouble [
]. He argues that countries have long "placed the sign in the window" by participating in international rituals they knew were partially false [04:00 ].06:19 A World of Rupture: He states that we are not in a transition, but a "rupture" where integration is being weaponized via tariffs, supply chain exploitation, and financial coercion [
].06:37 The Choice for Middle Powers: Carney warns that if middle powers only negotiate bilaterally with hegemons, they negotiate from a position of subordination [
]. He urges them to "take the sign down" and name the reality of intensifying rivalry [14:43 ].15:35
Canada’s Strategy: Value-Based Realism
Domestic Strength: To reduce vulnerability to retaliation, Canada is fast-tracking $1 trillion in investments in energy, AI, and critical minerals, while doubling defense spending by the end of the decade [
].11:00 Variable Geometry: Instead of relying on stagnant multilateral institutions, Canada is pursuing "different coalitions for different issues" [
]. This includes:12:00 China: A new strategic partnership with clear "guardrails" focused on mutually beneficial trade in energy and agriculture [
], [11:50 ].23:43 The Arctic: Unwavering commitment to NATO and Arctic sovereignty, specifically supporting Greenland and Denmark [
].12:16 The EU & TPP: Acting as a bridge to create a massive trading block of 1.5 billion people [
].13:18
Response to Global Pressures
Withstanding U.S. Pressure: Carney notes that despite considerable pressure and tariffs, the Canadian economy is growing at the second-fastest rate in the G7 [
].19:40 The Arctic Threat: He identifies Russia as a definitive threat in the Arctic and details Canada's military ramp-up, including new submarines, fighter jets, and over-the-horizon radar [
], [26:33 ].27:05 Middle East Peace: Canada has been invited to join a "board of peace" for Gaza. Carney expresses willingness to contribute financially but insists on a clear structure, the flow of humanitarian aid, and a path to a two-state solution [
], [27:44 ].28:46
A friend of mine, in the USA, asked if we could swap leaders. We can't.
ReplyDeleteBoth countries have the leader that their respective majorities selected. It's not a question of a better leader (not only, at least) - it's the people who vote for them; and each country got a leader who reflects majority thinking.
If that's not a wake-up call, I don't know what is. It also means that it's going to take a generation or two to change, and that's downright scary.
I'm so thankful that we have PM Carney to steer our ship through these turbulent times.
Interesting in all the smoke and mirrors and oxygen taken by Greenland (is Davos talking about anything else - climate change, Ukraine, SUDAN, etc??). we can recall what Hans Christian Andersen (ironically he is DANISH) wrote about the emperors new clothes: ".....Those would be just the clothes for me," thought the Emperor. "If I wore them I would be able to discover which men in my empire are unfit for their posts. And I could tell the wise men from the fools. Yes, I certainly must get some of the stuff woven for me right away." He paid the two swindlers a large sum of money to start work at once.
ReplyDeleteThey set up two looms and pretended to weave, though there was nothing on the looms. All the finest silk and the purest old thread which they demanded went into their traveling bags, while they worked the empty looms far into the night.
"I'd like to know how those weavers are getting on with the cloth," the Emperor thought, but he felt slightly uncomfortable when he remembered that those who were unfit for their position would not be able to see the fabric. It couldn't have been that he doubted himself, yet he thought he'd rather send someone else to see how things were going. The whole town knew about the cloth's peculiar power, and all were impatient to find out how stupid their neighbors were.
"I'll send my honest old minister to the weavers," the Emperor decided. "He'll be the best one to tell me how the material looks, for he's a sensible man and no one does his duty better." So off went the Emperor in procession under his splendid canopy. Everyone in the streets and the windows said, "Oh, how fine are the Emperor's new clothes! Don't they fit him to perfection? And see his long train!" Nobody would confess that he couldn't see anything, for that would prove him either unfit for his position, or a fool. No costume the Emperor had worn before was ever such a complete success.
"But he hasn't got anything on," a little child said. - A CHILD NOTED THIS - LIKEWISE ANY CHILD CAN SEE THE GREENLAND CRISIS IS SELF CREATED BY THE EMPEROR AND HIS MINISTERS AND THE PUPPET MASTERS BEHIND THE CURTAIN MAKING ALL THIS HAPPEN. AND OF COURSE HUGE SWATHES OF THE PUBLIC PLAY ALONG WITH THE CHARADE.
Canada and Finland are the new leaders of the free world.
