Human Rights Day is observed globally on December 10th to commemorate the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948, celebrating the fundamental rights and freedoms for all people, regardless of background, and serves as a call to action to uphold dignity, equality, and justice worldwide. It's a key UN observance, marking a milestone document that underpins international human rights law and promotes peace and development.
Women played a vital role in the drafting and adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights over 76 years ago.
Eleanor Roosevelt's leadership as Chair of the drafting committee is well-documented, but other women also made essential contributions to shaping this historic document. Scroll through to discover some of them and their efforts in advocating for women's rights within the Declaration.
On Wednesday’s #HumanRightsDay, join us in honoring the legacy of these women who helped shape the United Nations’ commitment to human rights and gender equality.
