Summary
A new Save the Children report finds a 30% surge in verified grave violations against children in conflict in 2024, reaching an unprecedented 41,763 cases and marking the worst year on record. Over 520 million children—more than one in five globally—lived in active conflict zones in 2024, the highest number ever recorded. Over half of the verified violations occurred in the occupied Palestinian territory, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria and Somalia. The study concludes that global military spending has soared while less than 2% of security budgets are allocated to peacebuilding or peacekeeping, leaving children more vulnerable despite increased security investments. Save the Children warns that conflicts are becoming more deadly and brutal for children and calls for a fundamental shift in global security priorities to place children’s safety, rights and voices at the center.
