The Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo, founded during Argentina’s 1976–1983 dictatorship, have led the fight to locate and restore the identities of children taken from disappeared parents. With the help of DNA testing and institutions like UNICEF, they have succeeded in reuniting more than 130 grandchildren with their families, making their movement a global symbol of justice and memory.

En una ceremonia en la Legislatura de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, UNICEF conmemoró 40 años de trabajo ininterrumpido en Argentina, reafirmando su compromiso con los derechos de la niñez. Entre los invitados distinguidos estuvieron Estela de Carlotto y Buscarita Roa, de las Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo, y el Premio Nobel de la Paz Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, quienes rindieron homenaje a la alianza de UNICEF en la defensa de los derechos de los niños y en el apoyo a las Abuelas en su búsqueda de nietos apropiados durante la dictadura.

Desde 1985, UNICEF ha trabajado junto al Estado, la sociedad civil y el sector privado para reducir la mortalidad infantil y la malnutrición, mejorar la salud y la educación, fortalecer la protección de la niñez y responder a emergencias. Entre los hitos destacados figuran la Ley de Protección Integral de los Derechos de Niñas, Niños y Adolescentes de 2005, la expansión de escuelas secundarias rurales mediadas por tecnologías y la iniciativa MUNA, que ha alcanzado a millones de niños a través de los gobiernos municipales.

Las Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo, fundadas durante la dictadura de 1976–1983, han liderado la lucha por localizar y restituir la identidad de niños y niñas apropiados tras la desaparición de sus padres. Con la ayuda de pruebas de ADN e instituciones como UNICEF, han logrado reunir a más de 130 nietos con sus familias, convirtiéndose en un símbolo mundial de justicia y memoria.
