The UN has presented revised estimates for its 2026 programme budget, proposing over $500 million in reductions alongside the first reform steps of the UN80 Initiative. The revisions include a 15.1% cut in resources and an 18.8% reduction in posts compared with 2025, with the support account for peacekeeping operations also reduced.
Programmes aiding least developed, landlocked and small island states, the Peacebuilding Fund, and the Resident Coordinator system will be shielded. Reform measures under Workstream 1 include consolidating payroll operations, creating new administrative hubs, relocating functions to lower-cost duty stations, and vacating leased New York offices by 2027. These changes mark the start of a broader UN80 reform agenda, which also reviews mandate implementation and considers structural realignments. The budget will be reviewed by ACABQ and the Fifth Committee, with a decision expected by December.
