Sad to see the US rejection of the amendments to the International Health Regulations agreed by all WHO member states by consensus - with full participation of the previous US administration - based on Trumped-up allegations by RFK.
I fully share Dr. Tedros' regrets.

Editor's Note: The amendments were part of a larger effort to strengthen global pandemic preparedness and response in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The amendments also introduced a "pandemic emergency" definition, aimed at improving international collaboration, and proposed mechanisms like a Coordinating Financial Mechanism, a States Parties Committee, and National IHR Authorities to support implementation and financing.
The US rejection, communicated on July 18, 2025, by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr., cited concerns about potential infringement on national sovereignty, vagueness in terminology, and insufficient public input in the amendment process.

Member States - State Parties to the International Health Regulations (2005) - have the right to decide whether or not to adopt and, subsequently, implement amendments to the IHR. We regret the US decision to reject the amendments adopted by consensus by the World Health Assembly… https://t.co/TM5DpesUwR
