Guns the leading cause of death for children in the US : Matthew Yim / Oklahoma Watch

Click here for the Matthew Yim  article:

Summary
Using 2023 CDC data, the article confirms that firearms were the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 17 in the U.S. for the fourth consecutive year.

It highlights that most gun deaths are suicides—accounting for roughly 60%—and notes dramatic increases in youth suicide rates among Black and Hispanic children since 2014. The U.S. children’s gun mortality rate is 6 per 100,000, making it over 9.5 times higher than Canada’s rate. Overall, firearms account for 20% of deaths among U.S. children and teens.

Editor's Note: Firearms have led child and adolescent mortality since 2020. Note however that the CDC excludes in these figures infants under age 1, where perinatal causes and congenital anomalies are dominant.  See Crossing Lines - A Change in the Leading Cause of Death Among US Children in NEJM

Comments

  1. Here is news that will stun.
Instead of a vaccine in their bun,
    Little kids are having fun,
Playing military games like the Hun.
You dont have to be a nun
Or enjoy words from a pun,
    Even move around and run,
There is no reason under the sun
In a civil country this is not to be done.
That a child should die from a GUN!
