Why We Are Appealing for Your Support to Local Lifelines in Sudan : Mary Racelis in behalf of CO-Peace and HAGOSS

Dear fellow members of XUNICEF,

The gravity of the situation of children, women and families in Sudan is generating the Appeal, War and Food Insecurity in Sudan; A Call to Support Local Lifelines. It was prepared by Dr. M. Munir A. Safieldin, well known to us in UNICEF. He served as UNICEF Representative in Uganda and Maldives; Chief of Program and Policy for the Middle East and North Africa Regional Office; and Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator UN Nigeria. He is now focusing his policy and planning expertise on his home country, Sudan, as Director, Insightful Impact Consultants Ltd. Dr. Munir has agreed to serve as the Coordinator of this joint CO-PEACE - HAGOSS Local Lifelines initiative.

Collaborating with Dr. Munir on this appeal are the CO-PEACE (Corridors of Peace for Children Everywhere) core group, composed of XUNICEF members David Bassiouni, Nils Kastberg, Baquer Namazi, Niloufar Pourzand, Mary Racelis, Rimah Salah and Mahendra Sheth. Partners are HAGOSS (Humanitarian Advisory Group on Sudans), whose CO-PEACE members are enhanced by outstanding Sudanese and former UN officials in Sudan and South Sudan.

(For further information on CO-PEACE and HAGOSS, please contact Ms Karthika Pillai, Executive Officer <karthika.msje@gmail.com> ).

By posting this Call for Action on News and Views, we are urging XUNICEF members and their friends urgently to donate funds to any or all of the communal kitchen associations identified by Dr. Munir in the attached statement . Since these local life-saving feeding programs are run by community women, this is the fastest and more effective way of reaching those affected,

The Call for Action offers additional ways in which XUNICEF and friends can assist Sudan's severely conflict-affected populations..As South Sudan is also suffering from war-inflicted violence, we are anticipating that lessons learned from this urgent appeal for Sudan will enable us later to generate a second phase for South Sudan.

In appealing to XUNICEF's hundreds of members with many years of service in humanitarian and development programs, we as fellow retirees know that our global colleagues understand the importance of enabling community groups to initiate, manage and sustain actions to save the lives and wellbeing of children, women and families in their home country, Sudan.

With thanks in advance for your support,
Mary -- in behalf of CO-PEACE and HAGOSS
