Famine Data Matters : Alex de Waal / World Peace Fundation

Video shared by Angela Raven Roberts

Greetings,

Following up from my earlier note on looking at Disasters. This is the current and very interesting project that is going on at Tufts University looking at famine data over time and now and what that means for future prediction and prevention. Many who have worked in previous conflict/famine affected regions may find this interesting. Thanks

Summary
Alex de Waal stresses that accurate, timely data is crucial to preventing and responding to famines. He highlights the damaging suspension of FEWS NET under Trump’s administration and introduces the World Peace Foundation’s updated famine dataset, showing that while famine deaths had declined since the 1980s, recent years have seen a reversal—confirming most famines are caused by human actions, not natural disasters.

Quote
"If we want to prevent or relieve famines we need data. We need to know where and when they strike and why."
