Summary
Edith Ballantyne (1922–2025) was a lifelong advocate for peace, justice, and equality. Born in the Sudetenland, her early exposure to political injustice led her to a path of activism. Fleeing Nazism in 1938, her family resettled as refugees in rural Canada. After marrying Cam Ballantyne, she moved to Geneva, where her work with the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) became central to her life. As Secretary General (1969–1992) and International President (1992–1998) of WILPF, she played a major role in international peace movements. Even in old age and despite failing eyesight, Edith remained politically engaged until her final days. She passed away peacefully in Geneva on March 25, 2025, at the age of 102.
Quote
"Edith’s life’s work and vision are an inspiration to everyone concerned about this era of growing inhumanity and its ramifications for peace and justice everywhere."
