Summary
Ghanaian President John Mahama warned that U.S. aid cuts risk diminishing its global influence as Africa seeks new partners.
Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, he highlighted Ghana’s $156 million budget cuts, including $78 million in health funding, due to Trump's aid freeze. Those $78 million of health cuts would hit children’s care and maternity services, as well as HIV testing and access to antiretroviral drugs previously provided by PEPFAR, the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, Mahama said. While acknowledging the challenges, Mahama saw an opportunity for Africa to boost self-reliance, increase food production, and advance a free trade area. He noted the U.S. is losing its "soft power" as countries turn elsewhere, hinting at China’s growing role. Spain’s Foreign Minister urged Europe to fill the gap, citing increased Spanish aid to Africa.
