A Journey of Friendship and Discovery - the 2025 XUNICEF Reunion in the Philippines By Teresa Stuart Guida

The much-anticipated 2025 XUNICEF Reunion in the Philippines (February 3 – 9) has come to a vibrant close, bringing together 58 participants, including UNICEF retirees and their families from 18 countries. The Core Organizing Group (COG), led by the indefatigable Mary Racelis and the dynamic Ces Adorna, orchestrated this phenomenal gathering in collaboration with a marvelous team from Media.Xchange PR Consultancy Services (MediaX) led by Peachy Guioguio. Together, they crafted an engaging program that was not only enriching but also filled with fun and fellowship.

The reunion kicked off on Day 1 with a welcome program and cocktails, setting the stage for reconnecting with cherished friends and forging new connections. Esteemed historian Professor Ambeth Ocampo captivated us with a compelling multimedia narrative on Philippine history, while the deputy representative of UNICEF Philippines, Behzah Neubary shed light on the pressing issues that shape UNICEF's mission in the country.

On Day 2, our adventure began in the bustling heart of Manila, where history and modernity coexist harmoniously. We explored the iconic Intramuros, the historic walled city, reflecting on the nation’s past under three centuries of Spanish rule (1565-1898) and 48 years of American colonization (1898-1946). As we meandered through its narrow cobblestone streets, we hopped onto vintage tranvia streetcars, immersing ourselves in the history of the era. A visit to the National Museum of Fine Arts added depth to our understanding, showcasing masterpieces like Juan Luna’s The Spoliarium and a poignant sculpture by National Hero Jose Rizal, gifted to his beloved Josephine Bracken on the eve of his execution.

The day culminated in a delightful dinner buffet at Barbara's, renowned for its vibrant cultural show featuring traditional Philippine folk dances performed by a professional dance troupe, accompanied by a rondalla (traditional) orchestra. The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the spirited participation of XUNICEF members in the iconic Bamboo Dance, or “Tinikling,” carefully navigating the rhythm of two swiftly moving bamboo poles.

Day 3 whisked us away to Silang, Cavite. There, we explored the high impact, community-driven projects of the International Institute for Rural Reconstruction (IIRR). Their community approach to nutrition improvement and food security has become a model for many countries in Asia and Africa. Afterward, a sumptuous buffet lunch awaited us at Gourmet Farms. We savored every bite before embarking on a scenic journey to the cool highlands of Tagaytay City. At the Taal Vista Hotel's panoramic observation platform, we were in awe of the breathtaking views of Taal Volcano. We couldn't resist capturing the moment on our phones, with the stunning backdrop of Taal Lake framing our photo-ops.

Our adventure blossomed on Days 4 and 5 as we hopped on a short flight to the mesmerizing Bohol Island, a true gem in the heart of the Philippines, celebrated for its iconic Chocolate Hills, charming tarsiers, and pristine beaches. At the Tarsier Conservation Sanctuary, we were captivated by the Philippine tarsiers—the world’s tiniest primates, no larger than a fist—in their natural habitat. We stood in awe at the breathtaking vistas of the Chocolate Hills; their undulating forms painting the landscape in shades of green and brown. As night fell, we embarked on a magical river cruise to watch thousands of fireflies dance in the darkness, creating a fairy tale-like atmosphere that felt almost otherworldly.

Our Bohol tour was a feast for the senses: we sang and danced to familiar tunes as a group of talented schoolchildren played various string instruments to welcome us; we savored organically grown dishes at The Bee Farm, picked up unique locally made souvenirs; and had lunch at the Kinaiyahan Forest Park, a sanctuary that champions the environmental and economic benefits of the bamboo ecosystem.

At the Bohol Bellevue Hotel, we found the perfect haven to unwind and celebrate our shared experiences with UNICEF. Surrounded by stunning coastal views, we all wished we could linger a little longer, extending our stay to soak in the turquoise beauty of the shoreline.

As we returned to Manila on Day 6, some participants indulged in shopping at the massive Mall of Asia, while others opted for relaxation at the Manila Hotel. Our final XUNICEF meeting was a pivotal moment, designed to gather invaluable feedback, share lessons learned, and brainstorm ideas for the XUNICEF reunion in 2026 at the breathtaking Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. We then transitioned into the closing program. A sumptuous dinner awaited us, followed by an electrifying night filled with lively music, spirited dancing, engaging games, and heartfelt singing—transforming the evening into a festive celebration that left everyone in high spirits.

Throughout the reunion week, the 2025 XUNICEF WhatsApp Chat Group became a platform for participants to receive daily reminders from MediaX, exchange insights and photos, post snapshots for the Photo Bingo Challenge, express heartfelt appreciation, and connect during and even post-reunion. The warmth and camaraderie experienced during the 2025 XUNICEF Reunion will undoubtedly resonate in our hearts as we look forward to reuniting again next year.

Some quotes from the 2025 XUNICEF Reunion participants as shared on WhatsApp:

Augustine V. (India):
"We just had the most amazing experience visiting the adorable tarsiers of Bohol, Philippines! Meeting these tiny primates, known locally as 'Mamag' or 'Mawmag,' was undoubtedly one of the highlights of our trip.

Here’s what made it so special:

Unique Features: We were captivated by their enormous eyes and the incredible ability to rotate their heads almost 180 degrees. Their nocturnal nature made them even more fascinating to observe.

Endemic to Bohol: At the Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary, we had the privilege of seeing these endangered creatures in their natural habitat.

Sustainable Tourism: The sanctuary’s commitment to protecting these sensitive animals truly impressed us. We were careful to keep our voices low and avoided flash photography to ensure they remained stress-free.

Pro Tip: We learned that tarsiers are so delicate that even loud noises can harm them. Respecting their space is crucial for their well-being.

Fun Fact: Despite being roughly the size of a fist, tarsiers play a vital role in maintaining the balance of their ecosystem.

As we bid farewell to this island paradise, we carry with us invaluable lessons about preserving our planet's treasures and the power of community-driven initiatives. Bohol is more than a destination; it’s a beacon of hope and inspiration for a sustainable future."

TM (Ethiopia):
"I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in organizing the XUNICEF reunion in the Philippines. The level of detail and respect you put into everything was remarkable, it truly was a flawless event.

I especially appreciated your flexibility when we mentioned the program felt a bit crowded. Adjusting the schedule with minimal disruption made a significant difference. We felt like celebrities! A camera crew followed us, there were dances and songs in our honor, and we were welcomed with a grand 'XUNICEF' sign at the airport. The fresh, delicious food, prepared with such care, was the cherry on top.

Thank you once again for all your hard work in making this a memorable experience for everyone. I must also highlight the incredible hospitality of the Filipino people. At the hotel and everywhere we went, our requests were met with enthusiasm and solutions. I will definitely encourage my friends to visit the Philippines!"

Madhu (UK):
"Thank you all for your wonderful support, friendship, and warm smiles. There was a strong sense of family among us, and the same warmth was extended by every Filipino we encountered. I wish everyone safe travels and a happy, healthy year ahead. The bond we share continues to grow stronger."

Francesca T. (Switzerland):
"A heartfelt THANK YOU to each and every one of you for making this reunion truly unforgettable. I arrived with curiosity and an open heart and am leaving filled with gratitude for the meaningful moments we shared, the friendships we forged, the laughter, music, dances, and the experience of a wonderfully hospitable country and its kind people. These memories will warm our hearts every time they come to mind, and I eagerly look forward to our next gathering as the unique XUNICEF family!"

The XUNICEF annual gathering is a brilliant idea! Having lived in the Philippines for many years, I am continually impressed by the local hospitality.

I owe a huge thanks to Ces for connecting me with this wonderful group and for this unforgettable experience. Hats off to the organizers for their meticulous planning and execution—it truly reflects the power of UNICEF. It was clear that none of us looked old and retired; we all felt youthful and full of joy!"

Nino Brusa (Italy):
"Ces for President! I’ll be following up on a proposal to inform soon-to-retire staff about our group. I met such inspiring people! Mary is truly amazing. So is Peachy. Wonderful memories built!”

Alfred and Kuntala (India):

“First of all, A big thank you to Peachy, Tes, Kara and the whole team of Media.Xchange for the wonderful and impeccable arrangements they have lined up for our comfort taking into consideration our age group.

And the participation of all in the group in the many activities is highly commendable. The care and concern taken by all at my freak accident is so touching. Our heartfelt “Thanks” to all of you. We’re back home last night and will be visiting our physician today to get my ankle X-rayed.”

“I would like to thank the whole organizing team as well as the MediaX team for such a wonderful reunion in the Philippines - a great program and the opportunity to meet old friends and make new ones, and to reconnect. The mixed program between the UNICEF mandate and tourism was perfect. And thanks for the flexibility to adjust. We would have appreciated more leisure time to enjoy the great venues, especially Bohol Bellevue Hotel. Please consider an 8 to 10 days program for future reunions. Specific thanks for the efforts to taste the Filipino hospitality, cuisine and culture. Hope to see you all at the Victoria Falls next year.”

Michele R. (Jamaica)
