A Low- Tech Way to Save Babies' Lives : Trisha Mukherjee / Nicholas Kristof / NY Times

Article shared by Kul Gautam

A brilliant piece by @trisha_writes Mukherjee & @NickKristof on the many advantages of optimal breastfeeding. But as @UNICEF, @WHO, @TheLancet and others have long argued breastfeeding moms need the support of the whole society including policymakers and celebrities like football star Pelé!

Summary
Breastfeeding is a cost-free, globally available solution that could save over 800,000 children’s lives annually by reducing child mortality by at least 10%.  Despite these advantages, fewer than half of babies worldwide are optimally breastfed due to a lack of knowledge and systemic barriers. In developing countries, breastfeeding is especially crucial, as formula alternatives are often unsafe or unavailable.

Quotes
“Empowering women with information about optimal breastfeeding and employing community health workers to promote the practice have significantly lifted rates of breastfeeding in countries such as Vietnam and Burkina Faso.”
