Liechtenstein's Veto Initiative is a groundbreaking effort to hold the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council accountable for their use of the veto. The initiative requires a General Assembly debate within 10 business days of any veto being cast. While the initiative has been successful in increasing transparency and accountability, it has not so far succeeded in stopping continued vetoes by the US and Russia.
Ambassador Christian Wenaweser
"The (Security) Council is not doing its work, so then we must do the work elsewhere. And that place is the General Assembly."
"What we want is to diminish the veto in all its aspects and take it to a place where it stops doing the harm that it is doing now."
"It's been more successful than I hoped and thought."
