A video message by three coordinators of Bangladesh students' movement proposes Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mohammad Yunus as head of the interim government of Bangladesh.
Will he be asked? Will he accept? I hope he will consider it.
A good example is that of former Thai Prime Minister Anand Panyarachun who accepted to be interim PM for a short period (twice) and gave up power after organizing elections. Anand became immensely popular during his short tenure and was known as "Mr. Clean".

ReplyDeleteAs I stated in my note to Kul, this is a great idea, but outstanding humanitarian leaders such as our dear friend, Yunus, prefer to keep out of the political game and devote all their energy working for the rights and benefit of underprivileged people. If he does agree to become a political leader, I do hope Yunus will follow the example Kul mentions in his comment. However, it seems the military has stepped in and seems to have decided to form the interim government promising to facilitate transition to a democratic system. It is my hope and prayer that the Bangladesh military will not follow the example of the Pakistani armed forces, which has deepened and sustained its hold over political power. Meanwhile I wish to hail people power wielded at the grassroots to bring about change ending autocratic rule, no matter the family background of the dictator. Baquer
The care taker interim government in Bangladesh has been sworn in––Dr Yunus as the leader. Students were dead against army marshal law. The army chief had no ambition to take over the power it seems. Let's see what happens next.
