With Richard Jolly in Lewes, UK : Ashok Nigam

Being in England for a week for my Cambridge college's 50th Anniversary reunion of my batch, I connected with Richard to go and see him in Lewes and pay my respects. Richard turned 90 on 30 June. He lives in a ground-floor flat in quaint Lewes with plenty of books surrounding him in his living room. He says he is very fortunate that one of his daughters lives in the flat next to his and another not far away. His last book "A Development Economist in the United Nations" published in 2023 is a memoir of his experiences over the 90 years with reflections on lessons learned. He recalled the achievements and impact of UNICEF very fondly in particular of 'Adjustment with a Human Face'. He sends his best to all who remember him.

  3. On a lighter note, I recently read a memoir titled "Persistence of Light" by John Hoyte, a classmate of Richard Jolly's at Cambridge. In 1959, he and Richard with a few others launched the British Alpine Hannibal Expedition, tracing the route of Hannibal's invasion of Europe and trek over the alps in 218 BCE. To be authentic, this band of scholars even brought along an elephant!

  4. A Ditty for Sir Richard Jolly

A belated Happy Birthday to our favorite Knight
All of Ninety and ever as bright.
So good to know that he is doing alright.
So well known for leading the UNICEF fight
With the IMF and World Bank and all their might,
But succeeding to convince them to see the light,
That their "adjustment policies" were worsening the plight
Of vulnerable children and women, yes quite,
While denying them their human right.
Dear Richard, the space here is too tight
And it is getting late at night,
So to shorten this Ditty on the XUNICEF site,
Nadia and I wish you good health, long life and everything else in sight !
