Fantastic. Thanks for sharing
Hi Alfred
Life (and working) in the Pacific islands had its perks and difficulties! I can't deny that I enjoyed being there. I live in greater Washington D.C area––my neighborhood is called Vienna Town center. Where are you based?

Amazing photography, Myra! I like to take photos but on my cell phone these days. In the past I had used good cameras, though.

I sympathise with you Nuzhat. I was in Suva for three months on assignment after my retirement. I did come to know all the difficulties faced by the field offices. And adding to that were the scarcity of flights amongst the island. I o hope to meet you and exchange Fiji days.
All the best wherever you are posted now.

Bassani Bilge: Very sad to hear Andrea's passing. He was a good friend and like brother to me since we shared an office at Innocenti for a year. His life was worth living. Contributed so much for the well being of children and human family. May he rest in Peace.

Good to see you’re back. Thanks for the great job. And a special thanks to Sree Gururaja and Gianni Murzi for all their contributions over the last years to keep us all together in this invaluable space! Bravo bravissimo and we’ll miss you Sree and Gianni. Thanks again 🙏
How very sad. Andrea played a major and historic role in UNICEF in formulating UNICEF’s strategy of Adjustment with a Human Face in the 1980s which challenged the dominating approach of the World Bank and IMF. For most of the 1980s, this approach had been subjecting many of the poorest developing countries to setbacks and constraints, seriously setting back their development. After several years of denials, first the IMF and then the World Bank conceded that they had been misguided and that UNICEF was right. It was a major concession and led slowly to a broader approach, admitting that UNICEF had been right.
Andrea played a major role, along with Frances Stewart and Richard Jolly in achieving this fundamental change. Andrea’s role with that of Frances deserves to be remembered.

Dear Sir Richard Jolly and Mr. Gautam,
Andrea Cornia passed away this morning, at hospital in Florence, after a long battle with cancer.
May His Soul Rest in Peace, Amen.
I will be informing UNICEF HQ and ex UNICEF staff via Mr. Tom McDermott.

Dear Marta,

Thank you for sharing the sad news of the passing of our dear friend and colleague Giovani Andrea Cornia. I am sharing your message with a few other colleagues who knew, worked with and admired Andrea.

Andrea was an intellectual giant. Together with Richard Jolly and others he played a major role in critically analyzing the impact of the structural adjustment policies promoted by the IMF and the World Bank in the 1980s that had a massive negative impact on the well-being of women and children in developing countries. The resulting UNICEF publication of "Adjustment with a Human Face" (AWHF) did much to challenge and eventually change the IFI's policies.

Jim Grant, Richard Jolly and many other UNICEF leaders, including our Goodwill Ambassadors and UNICEF NatComs used the findings and recommendations of AWHF to advocate for more child-friendly economic policies with considerable success. AWHF lifted UNICEF's voice as a respected advocate for sound economic policies in many of the world's important development forums beyond the World Bank and IMF, including at OECD/DAC, the World Economic Forum, Society for International Development, national development planning commissions and in the some of the world's top academia.

As you point out, Andrea also made important contributions to policy studies at IRC-Florence and in the CEE/CIS region, both as a UNICEF staff member and even after his retirement.

At a personal level, Andrea was full of life with good humour & friendly demeanor.

May Andrea's soul rest in eternal peace.

very warm greetings! I hope you are well and enjoying a restful summer. it was good to see you in our recent Arigatou meeting and it is always a pleasure to read the messages you share.

I am writing with not very good news I just received from friends in Florence - Andrea Cornia has passed away this morning. I understand he had been unwell and was recently hospitalized.

It is sad to see him go but, as we know well, Andrea’s determination, strong commitment and decisive contribution to Unicef policy studies at IRC, in the CEE/CIS region, and to structural adjustment with a human face will remain a reference for many years to come.

Very fond regards
Marta

Loved reading your article, Ken! It's interesting and funny.
May he rest in peace. Adjustment with a human face was a very useful document.

Might it help the situation of children in Ukraine, to call for a launch of a "Children as a Zone of Peace" to help further publicise what children there are suffering?
Thank you for your feed-back. I can always be contacted directly on my mail: klaubjerg@gmail.com

Brother John, Oh my God. You actually read it all ! Happy to know you have recovered from the exhausting effort! Indeed the journey was a gift for people whom I love. In all modesty it was one of wised decision I have made in my life. Taking notes proved helpful I am also grateful to Tom McDermott for wanting to share the story with the retired UNICEF family . God bless you John for your comments and encouragement . Jim

Holy Smokes Jim, I’m exhausted just reading this.
What a trip.
Well done, well written, time well spent. I hope the children of your family loved and remember all of it.
Was this journey a gift my brother? I expect so, and think you did a great deed.

Reflecting, I’m very glad you dreamed up such a journey and then did all the work to make it happen. And, kept your sanity through out what must have been exhausting at times.

And, I’m glad you wrote it down, and then shared it with all your ex Unicef brothers and sisters. Good for you. God bless, John
Hi Tom and XUNICEF team: Thank you from my heart for publishing this post. Kul Gautam's remarks on the book makes me so proud of myself and him and he deserves my highest appreciation for summarizing the feelings as a reader. I hope all of you my proud colleagues and friends within and outside UNICEF will provide me any feedback in my email: brampkoirala@gmail.com once you go through it. Best wishes and and regards.
This article provided a real discovery for me - I had never heard of UPEACE until now. Clearly this is an institution that could backstop the work of our CO-Peace group and the many others in XUNICEF who want to promote peace initiatives. The article is also a reminder and an inspiration for all on us in 'post-UNICEF' lives to spend some time and effort in serious study. Thanks Marjan.
The Innocenti study on ‘Remittances’ states that Beyond their undeniable economic importance, remittances are a vital lifeline for underprivileged children and marginalized communities.. I very much agree. Perhaps all development aid should be channelled into remittances to the poor.
How do you know? Do you have any proof? you better read the reports...
A madame Jade Zelnik,
