Colonel Waibhav Kale, a former Indian army officer, died on Monday after a UN vehicle was struck near the city of Rafah. Another staffer was injured. Col Kale's death is the first of an international UN worker in Gaza since the start of the conflict. At least 190 national staff have been killed in Gaza.
The vehicle hit was carrying Kale was clearly marked as a UN vehicle. UN sources believe it was hit by fire from an Israeli tank. An investigation by the UN and by Israel's IDF is underway.
Kale was working for the UN Department of Safety and Security. He is survived by his wife Amruta and two teenage children, son Vedant and daughter Radhika.
The nationality and UN agency for whom the female staff member has not so far been announced.
He was en route to the European Gaza Hospital in Rafah along with a female colleague, when their vehicle came under attack on Monday. The colleague was wounded in the strike, but managed to crawl to cover and call for help.
